451753 2006-05-03 12:05:00 Hi All
Running win xp on Pentium 4 2.4gz with i gig of ram.
Now my problem seems to be that i cant see any devices in the device driver window..tried clicking see hidden devices etc.
Also I noticed that when i was loading my new wireless router/modem that i couldnt see any lan connection icons on my task bar (they used to be there at one time)I am using Zone alarm as a firewall and am wondering if it has maybe hidden everything from view for some reason.Or is it some kind of virus, done several virus checks and come up with nada.
Heres another weird thing,it takes for ever to find all my drives when i click on my computer?? have 80 gig hard drive and have 35% free..defrag regularly.
any help would be appreciated.
regards
Keith

451754 2006-05-03 12:09:00 I would say your Registry is munted, I would suggest you cut your losses and backup/format/install.

Or use system restore.

re: Empty Device Manager

"The issue is security permissions in the registry. I cannot tell how they are lost but I can tell you how to fix it short of having to re-install Windows!

You must use regedt32.exe in Windows 2000/XP (as I have not seen this problem posted for any other operating system). Be very careful making changes in the registry!

You must be logged on as a local administrator to perform this task:

1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

5. Click "Add".
6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
11. Click "OK"
12. On the warning window click "Yes"
13. Close REGEDT32

You should now be able to see everything in Device Manager, Network Places Properties, and Printers."

451760 2006-05-07 23:07:00 Differences here (support.microsoft.com)

Depending on which version of Windows u have:

Note Unlike Regedit.exe, Regedt32.exe does not support importing and exporting registration entries (.reg) files.

However,

In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, Regedt32.exe is a small program that just runs Regedit.exe.
