Dell is the way to go, if you don't want to DIY. You get better quality for less $ than from the other brand names.

Oh please. They're all the same, cheap nasty components and support from India.

He doesn't have to DIY - every computer shop offers packages. Go to Ascent or someone, you'll get peace of mind, decent components and real service if something does go wrong.

Read this about Dell.

The way to go: Ascent or PB Technologies (AKL).

Go to their web sites and choose something and post the specs and price back here for comments. P4 or AMD: there are endless debates on this here on PF1 and everywhere else, so forget a definitive answer, besides - remember that its not the CPU but the CPU + MB + other components, which = performance.

Oh so how much do I need to spend when I only want UPGRADE BOX???? NOT monitor etc. I am not a gamer, but I would like a half decent sound card, poss a video card (not integrated)

Think my best bet is PBTech [Thanks to Steve L - think I will go with your advice] they pretty much have what I am looking for, with a few bucks left over to buy some blank DVD's

Baldy, quite a few places have upgrade boxes, even Dell, I believe. Just shop / surf around and compare prices, specs, and warranties / guarantees. Upgrade boxes usually start around $400 for a Sempron cut-down version, and go up to near $1000. PB Technology and Ascent will most likely alter the upgrade box to your requests - just ring them and see what they have to say - I have dealt with both companies and have found the tech/sales advice over the phone to be very good. When I got my system from Ascent, I went through each component and asked (in person) how much it would cost to get something better (if available). It was surprising in most cases not much more $$ got a better component. Like you, I am not a gamer, so opted for a 128 Mb graphics card (that was over 18 months ago).
