2006-05-07 05:40:00 | Hi there guys. I have just removed some Viruses from a friends computer and I have just removed some old unsused programes using add/remove programes and defraged the hard drive. That went swell but when I did another AVG Virus scan the somputer froze. Even Crt Alt Del wouldnt work. Any way went to reboot the computer and now there is nothing. The hard drive light come and it makes a couple of booting noises but nothing, nardar ziltch. Black screen and nothing. Please help. Could this be a power supply problem or do you think that it is somthing a little more serious. | CaptinMoor (8392) | |

I have just removed some Viruses from a friends computer and I have just removed some old unsused programes using add/remove programes and defraged the hard drive. The hard drive light come and it makes a couple of booting noises but nothing, nardar ziltch. Black screen and nothing. How old is it? What specs? Unlikely to be related to the clean out you did as even if it ate Windows you'd get the POST screen and/or error messages. I'd say a hardware problem. By booting noises, what exactly? Does the HDD soin up and you hear loading or is it just the fans you can hear...More info required. |

2006-05-07 06:13:00 | Not ot sure. Its old. I am guessing around a pentium 2, its a Dell computer running a intell celeron ship. I havent opened the case so this is the only info availible, sorry. I even chucked the Windwows disk to try and get it to boot to the re-install window but nothing. The CD-ROM read the drive then stoped. I think that the noise that I can hear is only CPU and PSU fan noise. There is non of the usual beeps and clicks and whirls. It has had a hard life of living on the floor and is packed full of dust. There is no doubt in my mid that I havent cause the problem, but would like to understand what I COULD be and how I may fix it. thanks for all your help and any info greatly appricated. Captin Moor

2006-05-07 08:50:00 | If it's packed full of dust and you're familiar with fiddling around inside the box of a PC then clean it out, even pull out some plugs to clean better, check around the fan/s, everywhere, get it sparkling. Unplug and replug everything, including all the external connections (monitor, keyboard etc.,) then post back. Sounds odd but.

2006-05-07 09:59:00 | And then start swapping hardware, starting with the PSU. Although personally I'd ditch it and run out and buy a real PC.... (Dell = :yuck: ) | pctek (84) | |
2006-05-08 04:06:00 | My guess is one of the viruses (virii?) was one of the MBR variety, rare nowadays. You may have inadvertently toasted the MBR en.wikipedia.org Personally I'd remove the hard drive from your friend's PC, and mount it in another working system, and attempt to recover as many files as possible first. After that, I'd reformat your friends hard drive, and rebuild it from scratch. However I'm conservative.

2006-05-08 04:58:00 | if it POSTS then boot with floppy and run fdisk /mbr | drcspy (146) | |
2006-05-08 05:04:00 | Well where to start. I have removed every piece of hardware I could find. Cleaned it with a camera blow brush. Put everything back then started replacing parts bit by bit. But to no avail. Replaced the PSU replaced the hard drive that had another version of windows running so that it should have booted. haha its toast alright and as PCTEK put it Dell ( :yuck: ) YUCK is damb right. I hate these bloody things there horrible. Any way That means that the only part that I didnt replace was the motherboard, therefore through a process of elimination its the motherboard. So chuck the whole thing in the biin and buy a real AMD powered Puter. Thanks for all your help guys. Its always good to have people to bounce ideas off. Will catch you next time. Thanks.
