2006-05-06 08:51:00 |   Okay, so I get given a pc by a friend who upgraded. Running Windows XP 2002 Home Edition. My friend assured me that he's removed all his old user files and passwords etc, then disapeared overseas never to be heard from again.....The problem is everytime I try to connect to the Net using my dial-up program. The program retains my correct ID in the USER ID box, but another password comes up and replaces mine, thus preventing the remote computer from recognizing me as a registered user of my ISP. I have to disconnect and go back and manually remove the other password, type mine in, and then reconnect. I cannot save my password, nor can I use the CONNECT AUTOMATICALLY option because of this. How do I stop this happening? I have deleted all the other user profiles, making mine the sole user account (administrator, passoword protected) but this stray password keeps popping up. Any thoughts on this or do I just have to put up with it? I'm only an ENTRY LEVEL pc user so any help is appreciated....thanks in advance for your help.

2006-05-06 09:06:00 | Oh...and yes, I have tried using the setup CD my ISP sent when I subscribed to them....to no avail...... | xtronz (10358) | |
2006-05-06 09:10:00 | Delete whatever dialup icons in My network places? And recreate yours with your login / password? You can create dialup connections / numbers etc manually, no need to use the ISP cd . What ISP are you with? Or if there's another dialup on that PC, open Internet Explorer / tools / internet options / connections . Is there more than 1 connection here?? If so, delete the other dialup, and leave yours there . And click on set default (if it isnt ghosted) . It maybe ghosted, if u delete the other connection . (And if there's only 1 connection there) .

Hey there speedy . . thanks for your help . . . okay . . . . I have tried setting the connection manually, and then with the cd once THAT failed, and also with my ISPs online connection program when the cd made no difference (I assumed it was a mistake I had made in setting up, but nooooo it couldn't be that simple-lol) . . . . . it still happens . . . so I tried the Network Places thing . . . . no avail again ARGH! I am with KiwiOnline . . . . . yeah they're crap, but I live in one of those rural places that has crap phonelines anyway so any other ISP is no better or worse and broadband is out of the question right now due to the fact that telecom keeps us in the dark ages and I refuse to pay top dollar for the worst broadband deal in the developed world . . . . lol . I'll just keep trying until I either fix it . . . . . or the pc dies trying! |

2006-05-06 12:32:00 | ...and excuse my ignorance....what do you mean by 'ghosted' and how/why does this occur when all the (seemingly) relevant associated user account files get deleted? Is Mr Gates tormenting me from his silicone valley? :waughh: | xtronz (10358) | |
2006-05-06 19:15:00 | By ghosted, I mean u cant select whatever option . So, what happened when u created the dialup connection manually? You couldnt log on? The modem didnt dial? What?

2006-05-06 20:24:00 | Hi There Your problem is the same as I have been having and may be caused by IE rather than the dial-up connection. I use Firefox as my browser although Windows updater insists that I use IE when visiting the Windows update site. When connecting to the internet via Firefox it remembers my correct password but when I connect to Windows update site using IE it has some long password (about twice the length of my correct one) and there is no way that I can get rid of it! I simply make the connection to the net via Firefox and then start windows update after closing firefox. I only have one connection showing in Network Places. Hope this helps Bruce

2006-05-07 05:29:00 | Hey Speedy, Hey Bruce Yeah Bruce.....thats the one! A great big, fat password that doesn't belong to me....yay that someone else knows about this problem. As you mentioned this ONLY occur when I try to connect to the net through my IE on desktop. Speedy pal,........thanks for your help. Took your advice, manually did myown dialup connection and VIOLA! Works just fine with no odd password. Its still annoying how windows has these little buggy things to really ruin your day though. Perhaps thats why I'm on my 3rd pc? :badpc:

2006-05-07 05:55:00 | I suspect you are getting fooled as I've seen many others get fooled by xp........does it connect with this 'big fat password that doesn't belong to me' or not ? what you may not realise is that if you put in say a six letter password or an 8 or whatever xp will 'show' you a whole series of dots (15 actually) and teh password is 'hidden' within them............DONT be fooled by this ......your password has NOT been changed by the system it's a security measure......

That's caught a lot of people out - me included. If that's not the problem you may need to reinstall IE. The official ways are here: support.microsoft.com The easier way is to fool Windows into thinking that IE isn't there. Directions here: www.dougknox.com |
