2006-05-09 05:10:00 | QMB Royal Oak is inside the Royal Oak mall itself, Pak N Save is on one end of the mall while QMB is next to McDonalds on the opposite side. I've been there once last month and found nothing worth complaining about.

2006-05-10 06:31:00 | Wot nothing more today..? And after I plodded through 2 on-off showers of rain just to get to a computer to read your opinions of QMB. (Auckland has an identity problem with weather, compared with what I'm used to. It has rained at least 6 times today - with sunshine in between. How does anyone know what to wear to work?) QMB will do an Asus motherboard for the same quoted price, I was told by phone today. So please tell me what you know of their after-sale service - good or bad. That's an important factor. And my sister tells me I gave you all incorrect information about the store's whereabouts. Apparently we weren't in Mount Albert, as I thought, but actually in the Mt Roskill branch. So much for my bump of direction... (My excuse is that when I lived here years ago in a previous existence, I didn't know the suburbs. My scruffy flats were mainly in inner-city slums - the streets now so gentrified you need small fortunes to buy there) So now I'll leave this room where 27 of the 28 computers are occupied by a United Nations of teenagers shooting people very loudly & hope that there's something new in this thread by the time I make the trek tomorrow..? So I'll add another question - and it's not just theoretical. I was going to buy myself a laptop one day. I wish I had one now. Bearing in mind I'd want something better than purely basic, has anyone seen a likely candidate in the mid-range which has a bit of future-proofing that they can recommend? I've no personal preferences, having only ever used one laptop - a neighbour's Dell in Central Otago. And I've nothing against Dell, provided it's wireless capable. Got to go. My ears are too old for this gunfire punishment from all sides. P.S. Rob99 - 2 sticks of RAM?

2006-05-10 12:36:00 | Socket 939 mother board is bound to be duel channel, meaning you need two sticks of ram. Of course they could set it up with 1 stick, but why.. 2 X 256 or 2 X 512, and if you specify you want the RAM in duel channel it should be cheaper than buying two separate sticks of ram, i.e. a duel channel kit.

2006-05-10 13:36:00 | Chilling_Silence has experience of QMB and has recommended them a few times. If you're near Mt Roskill then I can recommend DTC Systems: 360 Dominion Rd. My brother buys heaps of stuff there - in fact it's the only supplier he uses for hardware. www.dtconline.co.nz

That's an important factor. Forget QMB - they have no after sales service. It consists of ignoring you or arguing with you. A friend stood there once and persisted while all the staff walked around him and ignored him until he went away. Computer Lounge is good, excellent after sales service. Or see the thread below: |

2006-05-10 22:22:00 | I have used QMB twice, The first time i bought a few things and it arrived reasonbly quickly, that is after giving them a phone call after waiting 2 weeks! the second time, i called a friend in auckland and had him go and get my money back in person as I'm in Palmerston North. I've talked to a few people, and from what i can tell if your buying in person you will have no trouble with the purchase but if you buy online your in for trouble, and the After sale support isn't great, Computer Lounge is the most reliable place I've dealt with very fast and efficent and great after sale supportt, you could look at a shuttle combo package. It seems these appeal to the Ladies alot as they are so compact and computer lounge has some good bundle specials. Just my 2 cents

2006-05-11 04:22:00 | Stuff to think about there, all right. We'd be happy to go back to Computer Lounge, except for their pricing. They just wouldn't do the specs we originally asked for (those of pctek's home/office before she moved) They gave the impression that would be rather slumming-it for them. The guy said they only build to high end specs, to make sure there are no problems later. So their high-end version is $1856, as opposed to QMB's $1296. And that's a lot of difference. Sorry I don't have the energy right now to type out all of the details on their quote. No doubt it'd be a great machine, but flasher than needed. However, nzdrifter's suggestion sounds worth another visit. We weren't offered any alternatives or package there last time. And thanks for your suggestion, Greg. Will follow that up as well. Ditto Rob for the RAM explanation. In fact, thanks to everyone so far. And all suggestions still welcome.

Because they specialise in high end gaming the cases and PSUs they use are top end, so yes, more expensive. I'd go for the fancy case but thats me, and its not necessary. Try PB Tech then... |

2006-05-11 07:53:00 | why are you guys all raving about asus motherboards? , I have had no problems whatsoever with msi boards and am infact running one right now, as long as you stick to the big mobo manufacturers (msi, asus, gigabyte, dfi) there should be no problems | lagbort (5041) | |
2006-05-11 08:25:00 | Well I will go against the grain with QMB. I have purchased several full systems from QMB and plenty of separate hardware parts over the years. I must have used them 12-15 time and all have been online orders. I have never had a problem with any of the orders I have made and delivery has always been prompt. I have had to return one item and although it took a little bit longer than I would have liked that is the joys of dealing with a company 400kms away I suppose. In any rate, I would use them again (plan to) and I would recommend giving them a go. :2cents: Oh...and I would always look at an Asus mobo as first choice as well.
