2006-05-06 12:54:00 | The audio on my PC (XP Home) is not working. The 'SM Bus Controller' and the 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device' driver are not working. It happened after installing a new video card. Can someone help please. - Thanks | fritz (1552) | |
2006-05-06 19:18:00 | Hmm I doubt the videocard would affect the sound, or not make it work at all. Do you know what the brand/model of the mobo is?? You'll have to find out, so u can reinstall the SMB controller drivers, (this is usually needed), and the soundcard drivers....Or reinstall them from the motherboard cd, if u have it. What do you mean not working btw?? They've got a ? beside them in device manager? Or were they working before the videocard was installed? Or, if both were working before, delete their entries in device manager. And see if the system reinstalls the drivers for them. If not, you'll have to do the above.

2006-05-06 22:06:00 | Thanks Speedy Gonzales. The brand name of my mobo is Soltek SL-75 FRN2-L. Unfurtunately there is no mobo cd. I had my previous Soltek mobo replaced with another Soltek mobo but was told there was no cd available. The second mobo got a different model no. I tried the cd that came with the first mobo, but it didn't work. By 'not working' I meant a question mark beside the the 'SM Bus Controller' and an exclamation mark beside the 'C-Media AC 97 Audio Device' driver. I did actally uninstall the latter and reinstalled it with one I had downloaded from the mobo manufucturer's website. Unfortunately the exclamation mark is still there. I feel the trouble is with the 'SM Bus Controller' but don't know where to download it from. Thanks again for trying to help, hope to hear from you again. Cheers | fritz (1552) | |

2006-05-06 22:22:00 | I would say the drivers you're after are here (www.soltek.com.tw) These are the drivers for the audio (www.soltek.com.tw) Not too sure which one installs the SMB controller. It might be the Nvidia all in one driver (www.soltek.com.tw) on the above site.

2006-05-07 05:06:00 | Thanks SG, the audio driver is the one I have downloaded already from that same site you suggested. It did install alright but still with an exclamation mark. Not sure about the 'Nvida all in one' driver. My video card is a Radion, not sure if that makes a difference. Downloaded that file also a couple of days ago but then decided not to use it. Not sure if the installation of a wrong driver would stuff things up - perhaps you could tell me. I won't try the Nvidia driver before I hear back from you. Thanks a lot for trying to help - much appreciated. Cheers

2006-05-07 05:20:00 | Thanks SG, the audio driver is the one I have downloaded already from that same site you suggested . It did install alright but still with an exclamation mark . Whats it say under the general tab when u dbl click on this in device manager?? Any error code? Try deleting it and reboot . Are you using a separate soundcard? Those drivers SHOULD work from that site for the audio . Or its conflicting with something else . What else is showing a ! in device manager? Anything? Not sure about the 'Nvida all in one' driver . My video card is a Radion, not sure if that makes a difference . I'm not too sure what this driver will install . When you installed this videocard, is there a vga port onboard / on this mobo as well then?? If there is, disable the onboard video in the BIOS (if you're using an ATI card) . See if u get sound then .

2006-05-07 10:19:00 | When I click on the General Tag it says 'This device cannot start (Code10)' There is no seperate sound card and yes there is a VGA port on board. I am using an ATI card so I'll try and disable the video in the Bios, not sure how to do that though. There is only one ! showing up and a ? on the SM Bus Controller. Also a ? on the Ethernet Controller. As far as I know that one is only needed for networking which doesn't apply in my case. Many thanks again SC. Also thanks to you bk T for trying to help. Cheers

2006-05-07 14:10:00 | At last I got my audio back, it's just not the same without the engine roar of those V8's Not quite sure what in the end fixed it, but I didn't need to go into the bios. 'Nvidia all in one' didn't work had to uninstall it again. Thanks a lot SG you were a great help. Thanks to you too bk T. All the best - Cheers.
