| 452617 | 2006-05-06 06:39:00 | I'm a rural internet user and I'd like to change from dail-up to broadband. IP websites report that broadband is available in my area but that I should check to see if it will work at my location. I know I'm about 10 km from the local exchange (a roadside shed in the middle of nowhere that looks a little like a long-drop dunny!). Is there any way I can check my phone line to see if it is worth trying to switch to broadband? I did a line test at New Zealand ADSL (www.nzdsl.co.nz) and got the report - Download Speed: 34 kbps (4.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 493 kbps (61.6 KB/sec transfer rate) at 5:30pm on 6/5/06. Thanks. |

Yes Broadband is available in my area, but after telecom did a line test, they confirmed that I'm too far from the exchange. :( I've got my fingers crossed that the local-loop unbundling will result in a quick resolution for rural users wanting broadband acess. Thanks |

My feeling is that the opposite will result, unfortunately. Unless the economics are good (lots and lots of people to use the service in that area), nobody will now have the incentive to spend the big $. But rural areas don't have "lots and lots of people" City/Urban dwellers will see the benefits, at the expense of rural as I see it. |

No-one has that much money to start installing equipment all over NZ in the wops. You could try and see if you can get Telecoms wireless option. Have a look on their website for details. Setup costs are $1500 but the monthly bill isn't too bad. You would get 256k.....which is better than dial up. |

| 452624 | 2006-05-07 03:18:00 | Hello excelsa and "Jetstreamers" My ADSL coonection has also a long story, and , to cut short; the best way is if you can somehow get in contact with your local technitian. It may not be a Telecom person as they contract new connections out(at least in our area). For months/(years) we tryed to get broadband and Telecom always told us it is not possible. We where just lucky to see the technitian working at the exchange and he told us at that time that adsl would be available from that day. It still took months for us to get it as the Telecom admin had not done their job properly(wrong code) and the technitian had to push uphill to convince his masters that he had installed the new setup(box) at the exchange and that our and neighbourhood phones could be connected to broadband. Also the crucial bit is the distance from the exchange and the technitian told us that the 7Km is the magical number. Hope you don't have to wait to long! regards Gion |

| 452625 | 2006-05-07 04:18:00 | For rural people it's not just the distance. Electric fences along the way can cause mayhem in the copper. I was at Kauri Point in 2003, 11km from the Katikati exchange, Telecom told me then that they could install some device as a booster (?) in our local distribution box. Moved before they got around to it. Give Telecom a rev up. |

| 452626 | 2006-05-07 10:06:00 | Did telecom physically do a line test or some other way? On the telecom site (as supplied by stu161204 above) I put in my number and the reply was that "Broadband is available in this area.....but becasue many factors affect linespeed they would need to check further to see if Broadband can be delivered" At another link on that response I was asked to "request a line test" by supplying my phone number and they said "a technician would get on to it" Next morning I recieved an email which said: Test results: Further network tests show your number is located at premises which are too far from your exchange to support Xtra Broadband. What now: We have recorded your contact details and will notify you should the current situation change. |
