453825 2006-05-10 10:36:00 Well it's time to bite the bullet, a family member has decided she is ready for a decent laptop & we have narrowed it down to two choice's.

Im a bit torn as I really love the Vaio's BUT there is no denying the Macbook Pro is a very powerful unit. So what do you lot reakon she should go for??

453826 2006-05-10 11:25:00 You really MUST buy Applecare with the mac to extend the warranty from a pathetic 1 year to 3 years.

Heh, I've heard of people who got the mac and just wiped OS X completely. :D

At least the Mac will give you decent software to go with it.

I read somewhere that the 17 inch macbook pro is out (or about to), and was about the same price.

One thing to watch with the macbook pro is that it hasn't been out too long and issues might surface (in fact some did, requiring new motherboards).

Both are horribly expensive. Oh and the sony has much smaller screen.

453827 2006-05-10 12:14:00 macbook, easy choice if you are spending that sort of money+upgrade to the 7200rpm harddrive plod (107)
453828 2006-05-10 22:08:00 I'd go for the MacBook Pro. :) maccrazy (6741)
453829 2006-05-10 23:09:00 It really depends on the primary use and software you have (or wish to buy).

You mention putting Windows XP on the Macbook with Photoshop, this will increase the price further (for XP) and run Photoshop much slower than the Vaio. Same thing applies to gaming - if they're PC based games, it's a no brainer to go with the Vaio as the Mac won't be able to compete for speed. The main area the Macbook is better is with the bundled/included software.

So decide on what is to run on the machine and the answer should be obvious.

453831 2006-05-11 00:45:00 and run Photoshop much slower than the VaioRemember that BootCamp isn't an emulator (I think you are thinking of VirtualPC). It allows you to install Windows on a computer that is shipped by Apple with Mac OS X as the included operating system. I haven't used it myself as I don't have an Intel based Mac, but you should be able to find plenty of comparisons if you do a search. :) maccrazy (6741)

453833 2006-05-11 02:56:00 As someone has said earlier it depends a lot on what you intend on doing with it. It seems most of the software is from Adobe, who make Mac versions of their titles too. If you could get the OS X versions of them you'd definitely get more stability and possibly performance (although I can't guarantee the second one).

Bootcamp isn't an emulator as maccrazy said earlier, so speed shouldn't be an issue when you run Windows XP with it.

However, Bootcamp is still in beta, and a few people around the net have reported problems with it. I'd be cautious if what she's going to do using Bootcamp is mission-critical. Other than that you should be fine.

Overall, Macbook Pro still turns out on top. If you can get the 17 inch model (which is quite a bit more expensive than the 15 inch) then there's almost no argument here.

453834 2006-05-11 04:17:00 We have installed XP Pro on a G5 I-mac here at work & it has been ruuning great since we did it ( a couple of weeks ago), I even through some of my additional software like Nero, DvdXcopy, clean-up, microsoft anti spyware, spybot, adaware etc. on it and it took them fine. She has XP Pro and Adobe Photoshop already so I can just chuck it on....looks like Im going to have to slipstream SP2 and her XP Pro though as a bootable SP2 version is required to install it. I-photo, I-dvd etc. are all great programs, should be perfect for her video & photo editing etc.
