I am wanting to set up a home network and I need a few ideas as to how I should go about setting it up.

This is complicated by the fact we are doing bit by bit renovations on our house so the option is there to include some wiring for a LAN behind the walls as we re-gib. The idea being that other 2 bedrooms, lounge and kitchen would have an ethernet connection point.

The room I intend to use for an office has had a cupboard built in with cap5 wiring and powerpoints in it and I am hoping to put my printer, external harddrive and dsl connection in there. My wife uses a laptop so need wireless as well.

So my questions are...

1. what sort of network layout would work best?

2. can anyone recommend a router slash adsl modem slash wireless router slash print server or should I consider seperate products for this?

Hope all that someone can make sense of my drivel.

Cheers

453619 2006-05-09 23:59:00 An important point will be wether you will want to run more than 2 puters at a time and if one
puter will be in a permenant position or not.You may need to settle that before advice on what to install is sorted.

453621 2006-05-10 00:13:00 Welcome nzwaikato,

We're having a digital smart system installed in our new house at the moment. It will have a box in the garage with all the wiring and the ADSL router. Each room has an RJ45 port and I have a linksys WRT54GS wireless router that I will plug in to provide wireless access outside in the courtyard area. Perhaps you can find a supplier of these types of systems in waikato and get pricing/ideas from them.

Most wireless routers will have wired ports on them as well, so you can connect using either. Of course your wireless will work better if it is not locked in a cupboard.

As for print servers, definately stay away from the linksys wireless print server. I have had no end of trouble with mine, and it doesn't support WPA security. This means if I want to use it wirelessly I have to disable encryption on my whole network....and that ain't gonna happen!!

Do you have an old pc you can use as a file/print server?

453622 2006-05-10 00:18:00 Thanks for that,

Yeah I have an old p200 that still went last time I checked, might need to clean it up a bit was a bit noisy.

Any idea of companies that may do this sort of installation in the Waikato?
