2006-05-09 07:25:00 | I want to put more RAM in the PC. I currently have 128 DDR 266. Can i put a stick of 512 DDR 333 in as well. I appreciate that it will only run (if it works!) at 266??? Thanks

2006-05-09 07:50:00 | Depends if the mobo supports up to 333 ram. Whats the brand/model of the motherboard? Do you know?

2006-05-09 08:30:00 | it will simply under clock it to 266 so it should be ok. however sometimes you do get other incompatibilities but you proberly won't know untill you try it. it would pay to check the mobo manual as some boards can run 333 ddr at 333 with a 266 fsb cpu. if thats the case it may run better if you ditch the 266 ram.

2006-05-10 06:59:00 | So i have now replced the RAM and have got problems. Here is info in another thread, but i'm combining it here to make things clearer. I wanted to upgrade a HP pavilion 513a from 128m to 512m of RAM. The RAM it had was DDR 266. I coulndn't get any 266 so i ordered 333. In the meantime i tried some 400 in it and it worked fine. I picked up the memory today and saw that the 'chips' were on both sides of the memory board. The 128 memory that i was replacing on had these 'chips' down one side of the board. Anyho, i installed the mempry, Windows XP starts to boot but all the colours on the boot screen are dodgy and then i get the BSOD. Is this memory wrong, i was thinking maybe it was a SIMM that i got instead of a DIMM. Or is the memory faulty?? HELP!!! The new memory i got is VDATA DDR333(2.5)Mx16. SO i looks like i have replaced singled sided 128m DDR 266 with double sided 512m. I am not combining both sticks, i have taken the old one out altogether. SHould there be this problem or is the RAM stuffed???

2006-05-10 07:03:00 | Copied and pasted from your other thread. So, technically no you cant use 333 (PC2700), or DDR400 (PC3200). The HP site, says this system only supports PC2100 (266), or PC1600 (200) 333 or 400 may work, but whether its stable is another matter.

2006-05-10 08:44:00 | speedy, what are you on about? DDR 400/333 will simply run at 266 or 200 just like sdram does, its no different. i've had 333 ram on my 266 mobo for years. if the single 33 stick dosn't run then odds are its faulty or just not compatible. i've had problems with vdata ram before. try a better brand.

Well it may or may not. Only way to find out is to try it. If it crashes or gets unstable. Obviously not. Or the system may not like double sided ram. Why the simm in it now, is single-sided. |

2006-05-10 09:00:00 | it may just be faulty RAM - go down to Dick smith & get some RAM off them, then return it in a couple of days - they let you return their products for any reason within 5 days of purchase. | Greven (91) | |
