453527 2006-05-10 04:05:00 I had a friend mention Xtra throttles peer-to-peer traffic, by analyzing the traffic. I thought he used the phrase "data shaping".

He was upset because he paid for the band-width, and it's being artificially restricted.

Sound right?

453528 2006-05-10 04:14:00 Hi PaulD,
Thanks for the link, very informative.
Looks like the XTRA or IHUG helpdesk computers have not been updated with this information since neither informed me about this until a technician from telecom physically checked the lines onsite.
The world isn’t perfect I guess, but I thought living in the middle of Auckland in a rather new suburb (Danemora) new technology would have been installed from the beginning.
Not a happy customer

They did install new technology around Danemora (Fibre) bit jet stream does not work on Fibre so I think they had to stick in copper.

Also I think I read on here or herd from some one that Telecom has/is testing adsl2 / +2 around that area.

That would be great news! Will try to find out more. After dealing with Telecom, XTRA and IHUG for several weeks I have now excellent connections.

Just done the phone number check on IHUG’s website if broadband is available on my number. According to the Telecom release I should get a message informing me abaut the limitation. I got the following instead:

Yes! ihug broadband is available in your area now.
ihug broadband is available in your area (we can't guarantee 100% that you'll be able to get ihug broadband at your address due to factors such as distance from our equipment or the technology used but once you've signed up we'll let you know).

Looks like you have to signup first to find out if you can get the new high speed.

453531 2006-05-10 04:54:00 My experience of living in Dannemora was that no, adsl is not workable there. (+/- 4 years ago). Greg (193)

I think that has changed since then as there was a big fuss over that two or three years ago I think.

I think they may have completed testing adsl2 there or not, I am not too sure sorry

Good luck with thing!

Xtra do not Traffic shape in any way, up to now anyway. Your friend is wrong.
Other company's like Orcon do traffic shape as they offer larger caps and need to keep performance up during peak times.

Xtra don't need to traffic shape, they just have **** plans with pathtic caps, (oh and a overloaded network) that keeps your P2P traffic down lol.
