| 453577 | 2006-05-10 05:01:00 | Jack, I know it's a new computer, but this looks very much like dud RAM to me. Big files test RAM. Decompressors notice bad files, as you have noticed. Get a copy of Memtest86 (probably the iso version, since you might not have a floppy drive ;) ) and give it a go. |

| 453580 | 2006-05-10 07:12:00 | ...NV firewall is off. I even turned window's firewall off for last try. Tried another zipped file that I had succesfully downloaded and installed on the old box. It said something about corrupt files. That makes it virtually certain that it's just bad memory. ;) This is a new computer, which would have come with XP installed. Now Jack is uncompressing a large file, which will be using all his computer's memory, probably for the first time. And uncompression finds bad memory. |

| 453582 | 2006-05-10 08:31:00 | I've been doing a bit more experimenting. I set my old box up again and downloaded the 108 mb file . It downloaded and installed. I copied the zip file to disk, put it on the new box. It refused to open. Said corrupted file. So I put the cd back in the old box and it opened. To me that proves something wrong with new box. Now we get to NV firewall. It is selected "OFF". I can't find anyway to uninstall it. Does anyone know what NVidia "Access Manager" is? Is this the fire wall program. It's the only NV program on my hard drive apart from "NV Drivers" Is NV firewall an optional install? Ascent installed all the drivers plus winxp when they built the thing. So I'm not sure. I may clean everything off the drive and do a reinstall, but I don't want to do that untill I am sure it can cure the problems I've already uninstalled as much unwanted stuff as I can. The computer is running very welll apart from opening zip files. An associated problem. It refused to load winzip from a floppy disk and I just assumed the disk had gone bad. Now I've found another zip file on a floppy and it wont load it either. I have just realised that my back up CD's that the comp can't open all contain zipped files. All doc files load easily from cd and floppy |

| 453584 | 2006-05-10 11:42:00 | The computer is running very welll apart from opening zip files . An associated problem . It refused to load winzip from a floppy disk and I just assumed the disk had gone bad . Now I've found another zip file on a floppy and it wont load it either . Was it not unzipping files with Windows' built-in unzipper either? Are you trying to unzip files that are on floppy disks? How about if you try copying the files to your hard drive first? Will it still not unzip them? Uninstall WinZip if it is still on the computer, reboot and try unzipping a small file with the Windows unzipper again . Incidentally, your nice shiny new computer didn't come with Nortons at all did it? |
