453425 2006-05-09 06:02:00 I was wondering if anyone knows of some gigabit PCI network cards which are compatible with Mac OS X. I've got a Powermac G4 (AGP, Sawtooth model) running Mac OS X server 10.3.9 which we are planning to setup with many roles, most important of which is as a fileserver for backups.

For this setup I believe a gigabit card would help accelerate performance (we have a gigabit network and the client is also a gigabit compatible one). However, I'm having quite some trouble actually locating a Mac OS X compatible gigabit PCI card.

The Powermac which I am working with has 64-bit PCI slots so I'd prefer a 64-bit card. Any suggestions are welcome.

These aren't the fastest macs in the world anymore. I'm using a few as Retrospect backup servers on just a 100 MBit network and I aren't seeing the network being the limiting factor (most I've seen is 4 MB/sec).

The trouble with OS X is that it seems to be particularly slow at copying files anyway (even via firewire). Tiger seems to offer improvements and Intel-based macs are even better.

I'd even think about running a Linux PC running Netatalk (to talk to the macs in their native file sharing protocol).
