453353 2006-05-09 00:08:00 After some years without a backup programme, have now convinced myself that I need one.Looking for advice on the most simple system to use and preferrably free.

453358 2006-05-09 01:26:00 What I should really do is set up a test machine here and actually do a backup and restore, to see how it works. Greg (193)
453359 2006-05-09 03:13:00 What worries me regarding using Windows backup is that it may only work on the version of Windows that the backup was made .

A few people have posted here asking how to restore backups made on Windows 95 or 98 or whatever and weren't able to as they were using a newer version of Windows .

I far prefer to just make straight copies to another hard drive, CDs or DVDs than muck about with the Windows backup . If the files need to be compressed to save space then zip them up with WinRar or whatever .

Have DVD and external HDD. The external HDD is only 18 GBs and I have over 20 to backup.

Does the Windows programme shrink the files up?

Thanks to all who have replied to this ancient bloke, greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure it will only compress (shrink) the backup file if you are backing up to a tape drive and then the tape drive must support compression.
