454372 2006-05-12 05:54:00 I got my hands on a Seagate 80gb hdd (ST380021A) and have been trying to use Seagate Tools to low level format it .

Problem is that I tested it with DiskTools using the full diagnostic option . It gave the error of 22h and one remedy is to low level format it which is what I'm doing .

Hdd will pass POST at bootup and only when I try to use it e . g format .
it goes clicky clicky clicky . And then any program using it will freeze . I can reboot it afterwards but it will not do diddly and I have to power off and power on to get it working again .

Can I assume that the arms/actuators/magnetic reader thing in the hdd has carked it?

Vacumn seal it in a bag and freeze it for a week to see if it will work?

454373 2006-05-12 06:05:00 Vacumn seal it in a bag and freeze it for a week to see if it will work? Put it in a plastic bag, add 1 cup water and 1 tbsp curry powder, seal it, and boil it for an hour . Then put it in the rubbish bag . Or just put it in the rubbish bag .

The BIOS POST sees that a diskdrive controller (on the drive, that's why it's called IDE) is there . It reads the information about the drive from the controller . It does not test the drive .

The error probably says it can't find sector ID blocks . That's because the heads aren't reading the sector IDs . ;) A "low level format" writes the ID blocks . It can't do that if the head positioner isn't moving the heads to the right place .

The head positioner might have jumped over the stop at one end of its travel . That would make it do the clicky-clicky thing . But the only way to fix that would be to open it . If you've got a suitably rated clean room, go ahead . ;)

(It might make a nice techno ornament . The internals are quite pretty) .

454375 2006-05-12 06:13:00 This reminds me of a song I have heard parents sing..

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All day long

Now for the spinoff..

The heads on the drive go clicky clicky clicky
Clicky clicky clicky
Clicky clicky clicky
The heads on the drive go clicky clicky clicky
All day long

454378 2006-05-12 06:58:00 Thats a myth and doesn't work.

For certain HDD failure types the freezer treatment does work (for a one-chance data recovery), I have used it with success.
