Disclaimer: haven't done it, not sure if it's true, but TomsHardware is respectable, and the article is thorough. Might be handy for someone building a new PC.

"A 4.1 GHz Dual Core at [~NZ$280] - Can it be True?"

"Conclusion: The 4.1 GHz Dual Core Delivers Peak Performance For Pocket Change
Those who first break this bit of news to their circles of friends can count on some surprised looks - in fact, they might even find their credibility getting questioned! But it is true: a cheap CPU that costs $130 outperforms the fastest processors from AMD (Athlon 64 FX-60) and Intel (Pentium Extreme Edition 965), each of which costs" about NZ$2,050.

Mentions water-cooling at top of range. If you go this route, you may want to look into ThermalTake's Tai Chi case / water cooling kit combo.

Hahaha, right buy the cheap CPU so you can overclock it madly and save money and then spend s***loads on the case to keep the thing cool enough. Very practical. :illogical

454265 2006-05-12 04:01:00 Haven't done it again, but it only mentions water-cooling at the 4 GHz range.

CPU ~ $280
Tai Chi Case ~$670 [Optional, at extreme range of over-clocking]

Still compares favorably to a $2,050 Athlon 64 FX-60 / Intel Pentium EE 965

454266 2006-05-12 04:39:00 They're recommending extremely fast clean memory, like the Corsair's DDR2 1066.

1GB would be around NZ$370, normally around $280-$300, and not too common in NZ.

The motherboard would need to support FSB 1066, $165 or better.

454267 2006-05-12 04:41:00 Hey had already been mentioned over here.

Should be able to pick up the processor for $245 if you shop around and I don't bother looking at supercheap or anything as they are useless. Playtech has it for $245

Could be fun trying
