454055 2006-05-11 05:12:00 I have a multibox network here, operating through a D-Link Switch and sharing my DSL connection via a D-Link 504G ADSL Router. Prior to the 504G I was running a Nokia Ni500 but since Telecom gave me the 504 I decided to try it.

My two desktop computers W2K/W98 & Office 2000 plus my laptop (W2K & Office 2000) can email freely, no problems at all.

My kids operate another two computers on the network, both W2K & Office 2000 as well. They have full internet access and both can download email messages, but for the life of me I can't get Outlook to send messages from either box. The kids are old enough now to have their own accounts, but I can't give them those until I persuade Outlook to talk to the big wide world.

As far as I can see, Outlook is configured the same for all computers on the network, and ZA is configured on each box to let Outlook "send mail", but every test email I send from either of those two computers goes to the outbox and stays there.

The problem preceded the change to the D-Link router so that is not responsible, but I'm going spare here trying to see what obvious configuration parameter I have overlooked.

Any ideas?

Cheers

454056 2006-05-11 05:24:00 Do you get an error message when it is trying to send? CYaBro (73)
454057 2006-05-11 05:25:00 Does it give any sort of error message.
The obvious thing to check if your connection is with Xtra is to make sure the Outgoing server (SMTP) is set to smtp.xtra.co.nz in Outlook settings.

No error messages, just slides off to the Outbox and stays there. (No "sending message" message either BTW.) Repeat sends from the Outbox go nowhere either.

454059 2006-05-11 06:21:00 Billy, I havent used outlook 2000 is awhile, does that have the test feature for when setting up email accounts. what message does that produce when you run the test? SolMiester (139)
454060 2006-05-11 07:32:00 I would try using Outlook Express and see if that works. Cicero (40)

I don't know of any such test Sol, and since two separate computers are affected I doubt that it is a program type fault . I must be forgetting/overlooking a common parameter that I need to set .

When the answer is found, it will probably be so utterly simple and stupid that I'll be too embarrassed to mention it!

I think a tramping holiday from Afghanistan to Iran via Iraq sounds like a suitable diversion .

454062 2006-05-11 08:48:00 what AV are you useing on those pc's? more importantly what email scanning? tweak'e (69)
454063 2006-05-11 09:22:00 If you click the Send/Receive button manually when it's sitting in the Out Box does it then go?

Take a look in the account options to see if there's a 'Send Mail Immediately' option (or similar - I don't have Outlook myself but thought it was worth mentioning!)

454064 2006-05-11 09:45:00 what AV are you using on those pc's? more importantly what email scanning?
Now there's a point of difference that I'd forgotten, the two that work have NAV2003, and the two that don't have NAV2001 (I think) but that was also used on one of the working two and emails went OK, however I will now shut it down and see if emails send.

I am not doing any special email scanning beyond the routine AV checks on incoming, and I have never scanned outgoing. My reasoning for that is that not letting any in means you can't send any out, and since I never forward attachments that haven't been first scanned for nasties, don't go near dodgy sites, and delete all spam at the server via Mailwasher, I see the risk as very low. I have never had a virus infection in 10 years of computing, though many years ago MSAV (remember MSAV?) picked up "Stoned" on a floppy.

In answer to Jester, sending again from the Outbox does nothing.
