454047 2006-05-11 03:19:00 We are planning to setup a backup server to be accessed mainly only by one person. Currently we have the following server to work with:

Compaq Proliant ML330 Server
Pentium 3 850MHz (or around that)
384MB ECC RAM
33.6GB Seagate SCSI hard disk
Sony SCSI tape drive
1x Intel 10/100 NIC
1x 3Com 10/100 NIC

This system has been running as a webserver with SME server 6 on it for over a year and has never had any problems.

We plan to make the following changes to it:

Remove the SCSI hard disk
Install two 7200RPM IDE 80GB Hard disks in RAID 0 (or maybe RAID 1 or 5, still working on that)
Install a gigabit NIC (probably a cheap Realtek 8169)

The ditro we plan to run on it is SME server 7 (finalized or otherwise).

Does this seem like an okay configuration for a server which will be storing, probably non-archived backups? Technically it'll just be a file server. If anyone thinks that some hardware can be changed (at a minimal cost) or a different distro can be used then please let me know.

The client will be a Powerbook G4 (last model) running Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger". Therefore AFP compatibility is quite important.

454048 2006-05-11 04:11:00 Are you sure the ML330 has an ide interface in it, the ML330e does the ML330 has Untra2 Scsi.

To do raid 5 you need at least 3 disks otherwise it is just a mirror. If you not going to backup the machine (I would suggest you do if the content are going to be important), then use raid 1 (Mirror) and not raid 0 which is just a stripe with no fault tolerance.

Have a look at www.centos.org which is the base for SME Server 7

454049 2006-05-11 04:44:00 I would use Red hat but thats just me.

Why not retain the scsi drive and install the operating system on the scsi and use the ide drives for data.

454050 2006-05-11 05:45:00 from SME7 FAQ:

Realtek 8169 Ethernet is not recommended
The driver included in Centos 4.1 is out of date and has problems. See this bug listing for details, and please update the bug if you have a solution (ie. updated drivers)

duno if u looked into this yet
i've never used SME before..just went to its site to check it out
then saw that..and remembered ur post..

454051 2006-05-11 07:31:00 I plan on removing the SCSI disk because I'm not too sure how SME would then provide access to it. I'd probably have no idea which disks I'm saving to over the network.

Hmm so I guess I'll be looking at something a bit more expensive than the 8169. Any ideas on which card would work well?

I can't really say whether the server is a ML330 or ML330e as I haven't read the label for a while now. I know for a fact that it does have SCSI and IDE though. I am aware that more disks are needed for RAID 5 but then again I don't know if the RAID controller even supports that or not. I'll have to discuss with the person who's going to use it as to whether performance is needed or fault tolerance.

Unfortunately I don't think a GUI based distro would be too good as we're planning to have it operating with just a keyboard although I'm willing to consider something if it fits the bill with everything else. Is CentOS good for running as a server?

454052 2006-05-11 08:30:00 Intel EtherExpress PRO cards are probably the best open-source supported, cheap and widely available cards you can find.

Just use ssh to access it remotely.

454053 2006-05-17 01:02:00 Hey there guys. I've revived this fairly recent thread because I've made some progress with the project. We now plan to have 2x 80GB IDE HDDs running in RAID 0. Our main aim is to get the most performance and space from two HDs so RAID 1 wouldn't fit the bill.

The only problems I'm stuck with now are:
1. I can't find much information on the tech specs of the server (it's a Compaq Proliant ML330e, Pentium 3 800MHz with both Ultra2 SCSI and two IDE controllers).
2. I'm still unsure as to which gigabit PCI card would work with SME server 7.0. Has anyone had luck with the Netgear GA311 or Dlink DGE-530T? Any others (preferably cheap)?
