453933 2006-05-10 23:52:00 Hi,
I am trialing the Broadband schemes offered by xtra- and so far am delighted,
but-----

I have had it recommended that when I shut down my 'pooter at night that I also shut down and restart my router, so that the IP cannot be retained over several days by hackers, which could happen if the router retains the IP from day to day whether I shut the pooter only, off or not

To me every time I start up I get a new IP ID, but if this is required, I need to hear it from a reputable source.

453934 2006-05-11 00:12:00 If its a decent router with built in firewall then I wouldn't worry about it. gcarmich (10068)
453935 2006-05-11 00:20:00 Hi gcarmic,

the router is a standard ( I assume ) D link,536EP, from xtra-I have not a clue where to access the particulars as to a firewall- any clues?

I am a little surprised that a router would retain any memory

Although I have BB on from daylight to bedtime, I always switch off at night which normally gets a new I P when started again next day

453936 2006-05-11 00:29:00 Hello effie c :)

imo (some other PressF1 members may disagree with me here) you don’t need to do that :)

If you have a Good Firewall & all the ports show up as Stealth or closed on The GRC - ShieldsUP! Test site - . grc . com/x/ne . dll?bh0bkyd2" target="_blank">www . grc . com - . grc . com/default . htm" target="_blank">www . grc . com & your computer is up-to-date with all the windows updates & run Good Anti-Virus & check for ad/spy where then you will be fine :)

For example early on this year when we had a different router to what we have now we had an ip address for all most a month!, & northing bad happened to us .

To me every time I start up I get a new IP ID, but if this is required, I need to hear it from a reputable source .

When every your computer resets / starts up again your computer will get a new ip address from the router, but if your router resets then your router will get a new ip address from your ISP’s DNS server

Hope this helps & if you have any other questions or confused post them below :)

How would it keep your login info so you can get on the net right away with out you having to login to the router to login in to the internet?? ;) :)

You don’t really need to do that :) ( but if you do it, that’s fine ), that’s a good thing about always on BB you can leave your router on all the time.

453938 2006-05-11 00:54:00 Hi 161204,
Thank you - from you, I take heart- especially as your comments are NOT from an amateure, but a pro--( how is that for buttering up someone?-- but I do mean it :D
Not only do I have a good firewall, and all updates are in place (including 4 from Microsoft yesterday) but one of the reasons I am trying BB is some updates take, sic, 1 hour 60 minutes on a dial up modem- which is not for me- it actually took 9 mins :D
again thanks

453939 2006-05-11 01:07:00 i like to turn off the external modems at night simply to stop missdirected traffic chewing up the very limited useage amount we get with adsl accounts. a hacker dosn't need to hack it, just send heaps of crap data to use up your exspencive bandwidth. tweak'e (69)

But can a, sic "hacker" send, let alone hack, a pooter if it is turned off- mine is, every night
161204 states that it should not be a problem - I'll be interested to hear more on this-- as I have only 1 gb cap - so far, I am way, way within this mandatory cap, even with the pooter being online all day, and me sitting it at that-- even to the point I could get away with a lesser, cheaper contract- bar of course the losing of a great speed abvantage with this 1 gb as compared to xtra "Basic" plan- which I do not want any part there of

Updates. Don't count on them for anything.
Get a 3rd party firewall such as Zone Alarm, get a decent anti-virus and at least 2 anti-spyware programs.
Use a browser and email program other than Microsofts.

Then you're fine.

No, a hacker cannot hack your computer when the PC is turned off BUT if the modem is still on then it is still receiving internet traffic ("crap data", as tweak'e puts it) probing your IP number even though it has "nowhere to go" and that traffic is contributing to your data allowance .

It's not much over, say, a day, but over a month it all adds up and on a limited plan could push you over your limit if there is quite a bit of traffic .
