454165 2006-05-13 11:45:00 i had this issue, all i did was setup one computer with a direct internet connection, then cross over connections from all other comps into the internet one

so the ics one was the host of everyone

fonud it alot easier to do things.

EDIT
Also try creating a whole new group setup like randomhome or something, that usuall works

454166 2006-05-14 03:48:00 Could it be the difference between the network capability of XP Home and XP Pro?

XP home has restrictions, I beleive. Maybe it's fooled by the nonstandard workgroup name. Try "MSHOME", perhaps. :D

454167 2006-05-14 04:43:00 If nothing else works then try these mods.

Go to Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Local Security Policy-Security Options, and in the right hand pane scroll down to Network Access.

First of all check that "Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" is Enabled, if not change to Enable.

If you still get access denied, change both the "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts...." to Disable.

Check whether you get access denied still.

If you still get access denied then change "Allow anonymous SID/Name translation" to enabled.

These changes reduce security somewhat, but that can be the price for getting access.

Edit: these mods are to the XP machine

454169 2006-05-16 09:46:00 I believe xph is different to xpp in that you have to ENABLE 'file & printer sharing'. aside from the correct ip range and workgroup wgich you already have.

Have you tried a search for the xph pc from the 2000 pc?. if it doesnt resolve the xph machine name, try the ip address. If you can see the pc, but not its printers or default shares including the ones you shared yourself, file sharing is not enabled. That is or course if the firewall is briefly turned off for testing purposes.

I will check for where you enable it, i dont have the info to hand...

Edit...Actually check out this from microsoft. DOH, the guest account!!!

These options are not available in XPHome as far as I can see???

454171 2006-05-16 09:58:00 Oh, just checked up in my book of words and you are right, XP Home does not include the Local Security Settings console, it's only in XP Pro.

So that's no good then. I don't know what else to suggest.

Edit: I'll have a browse through the registry tomorrow, and find out where those settings are. It should be the same in XP Home.

I can see the other PC OK when I search for it and i have Nortons off so I guess it is not the firewall. I still get access denied. "File and printer sharing for microsoft netwoks" under the LAN connection is ticked. Is there any where else it has to be enabled?
