454031 2006-05-11 01:53:00 I have a Laserjet printer that's about 10 years old. It works fine, but has only 1 Mb of onboard memory. My wife is now doing the Church bulletin with images and 1 Mb is obviously not enough memory. The printer is so old it's not supported any more by HP. Does anybody out there have a 2 or 4Mb 70ns or faster 5V DRAM memory card to JEIDA spec? If so, what price? Thanks, KB. kbcad (1025)

454033 2006-05-11 02:09:00 Have you got the manuals, and/or have you managed to find the RAM sockets? Some models use standard 72 pin SIMMs, others are not quite so helpful. If you're lucky, that one uses the standard stuff and you might find a 486 computer for nothing or next to nothing. ;) Places like Molten Media trust in Christchurch might have the SIMMs. (If you need manuals, HP Museum (www.hpmuseum.net) will probably have the 6L ones for free download. 454034 2006-05-11 02:28:00 Yes, I have the manual. The memory is a card that is easily replaced, but need at least a 2Mb rather than the current 1Mb. KB kbcad (1025)

It's just plain EDO ram. I got about eight sticks of IBM branded 8mb 70ns 5v ram at $2 a piece if anyone wants. PM me for some.

454039 2006-05-11 11:03:00 The 6L does not take EDO RAM. It needs a purpose built RAM card that slides in under the left foot (looking from the front). They are very hard to come by and Kingston put out a compatible card some years ago. In 6+ years of working with printers, I have only once seen a RAM card for the 5L/6L - I put it on TradeMe and from memory it went for about $35. I have never seen another one since and the auction is so old it doesn't even show up in the expired listings.

Like I mentioned, don't bother with EDO RAM for the 6L because there is nowhere to put it, other than in the rubbish. The RAM for the 5L will also fit the 6L and you can see a picture of it here. Your best bet would be to either a) buy an entire 6L printer that already has the RAM installed (if you can find one), or b) throw the 6L away and buy yourself a working LaserJet 4 or 4+ on TradeMe for less than $20. Then you can use EDO RAM to give it a boost - although from memory the 4+ comes with 4BM of RAM anyway.
