455063 2006-05-15 11:24:00 Is it possible and safe to boot up XP from a USB removeable drive? I have created a image of my hard drive using driveimage XML, which is stored on a separate partition on the removeable drive. I have restored the image (ie. XP and programs, etc) on this removeable drive in another partition. Then thinking of see if it will work by booting the restored XP up. How is the drive made to boot and is it ok (or wise) to do so.... kahawai chaser (3545)
455064 2006-05-15 12:56:00 Never tried this using the method you have outlined imaging to a thumb drive
But I do use thumb drives to network boot floppy less and cd less pc's so that I image them. But the thumb drive has to formated using a utility to setup a boot sector on the thumb drive then of course the pc must be able to boot from an extenal usb device.
If you unsure want you you doing ....................

To answer your first question, yes if your motherboard supports it. Under BIOS, you should see something about boot priority, and if USB is mentioned, you've jumped through the first hoop.

I assume you mean a USB laptop drive enclosure, since you'll need some disk space for multiple disk images. (It's possible to use a USB thumb drive, and a "light" version of XP.)

Not familar with driveimage XML, so I can't speak to the rest of your questions. My hunch says it won't work.

455066 2006-05-16 10:59:00 in fact, sometimes the bios will try to load an OS off my Ipod (either when on usb or ieee1934) and i have to unplug and reboot, lol. muzzle (10342)
