2006-05-14 01:56:00 | Hi, I have a problem that winXp is trying to logonto a win2000srv network and it takes like 3-4 minutes to log on. Have tried static ips over obtaining one automatically, installed sp2 and nothing seems to work. Its frustrating. Any thoughts?

2006-05-14 02:50:00 | At what stage is it taking a long time. When you first boot the PC and it is getting the network and policy from the server or when you logon with a user account? Are you using Roaming Profiles, folder edirect etc. More info!! | berryb (99) | |
2006-05-14 03:05:00 | while trying to join the domain(use account). The machines load a user profile and at the moment these machines (3 of them on same domain) have been given a fixed ip and that has been set accourdingly on the server. But the problem is still the same. Folder redirects is sofar as the users are mapped to their own directory on the server but apart from that im lost and Im hoping thats enough info & we dont have to get a tech in (school out in the sticks!). | wabbit (10387) | |

So it's slow joining the PC's to the domain? Once joined the user login process is fast enough?? Still not sure here where the slowness is. How is the server setup? Active Directory, DNS, DHCP etc. What if any settings have you changed from the default server 2000 install? If you need to get a tech they may/should be able to do it remotely if you have broadband. Can be done with dialup just slower. 95% of the network management I do is off site via remote admin. |

2006-05-15 02:04:00 | Berryb has hit most of the important questions regarding slow logins. Overly-complex group policies will also slow down logins. Physical topology may also play a big role.
