454718 2006-05-14 00:02:00 Has anyone played around with this at all? I'd be interested to hear, if it works in NZ (I know Skype does 'coz I use it occassionally myself) and any other issues. It seems a good way to avoid huge costs inflicted by the telcos.
I've looked at this link chayden.net But what it is hinting at, is your spare linux box would be totally taken over and dedicated to this function. What I'd envisage doing is having telephony as one function of a few on my Debian system. I'm wondering if Asterisk can be installed on Debian (or any linux distro for that matter) and function. But is it compatible and practical for NZ?

454720 2006-05-14 01:19:00 Thanks JamesKan, no I haven't looked at that one before. Trouble is I notice it's only designed to work with windows; I seem to get better results with Skype on my Linux box and that's what I anticipated using. jcr1 (893)

The main problem weith Asterisk is that to access the analog world will cost could about $600 for a trunk interface card.. If you go with a SIP trunk interface it should be good..

454722 2006-05-15 02:17:00 I can speak to a large VOIP set-up. After an unnamed organization spent millions on converting from a traditional phone sytem to a Cisco based VOIP project, all promised savings disappeared.

An unnamed NZ telecommunication monopoly charged unbelievable amounts for voicemail (all digital) and even line charges to each phone extensions

There are no "telephones lines" to phone extensions, just network cables. Any network cabling problems are handled internally. Talk about paying something for nothing!

I think they're more vulnerable to lost business, than before. If a network switch dies, not only have they lost use of their PC, but also their phone. Thank goodness they can call the helpdesk with their cell-phone!

Long and short of it, always look at the fine print.

Can you say "hoopla"?
