454685 2006-05-13 21:39:00 Just a query regarding IP address allocation.

I have a 3.5Mb connection and it seems my IP address is always the same. I thought they didn't offer static IP addresses unless you're on the UBS service.

The reason I ask is a friend of mine in South Africa has uploaded some files onto Rapidshare, that I am trying to download, but I can't download them cos Rapishare keeps telling me that my IP address is already downloading files.

Now I have left it for a few days and still I get the same response from Rapidshare. Is there anyway to release my router's IP address and get a different one.

cheers

454686 2006-05-13 22:00:00 You need to disconnect via the modem interface or turn your modem off to be reallocated another IP address. snoopy (74)
454687 2006-05-14 00:07:00 Yeah I've tried that but it doesn't re-allocate a new IP address. I keep getting the same one. Is this something my ISP can deal with or am I wasting my time.

cheers

How long have you turned the router off for?, try turning it off overnight & take the phone line out of the back of the router & try it again.

You could ask your ISP

454690 2006-05-14 01:58:00 afaik most isp's run proxys so with some poor sites it looks like they are sending a lot to one IP addy when in fact that ip addy is the ISP's not yours. tweak'e (69)

ISPs will no doubt differ in their methods of IP address allocation but some ISPs will make efforts to assign the same IP address back to the user that last had it .

"Semi-static" IP addresses might occur if an ISP has more IP addresses than numbers of people wishing to connect at various times so that the ISP does not need to reuse addresses like they would if it were the other way around .

If this is the case then you may have the same IP number until either the UBS terminator at the ISP fails, is rebooted, reconfigured, or the Telecom ATM link to the ISP drops . It therefore will make no difference whether you turn off your modem for 10 minutes, 10 hours or overnight . Possibly ten days might do the trick but otherwise there is little, if anything, that an ISP can do to change your IP number .

My appreciation goes to the forum member who recently explained the workings of the system to me . He knows who he is . ;)

454692 2006-05-14 10:04:00 I am with an ISP and built a web site for my local Golf club. When I go to cpanel which is about twice a month I can see my IP address always there as accessing.

Does not change. I do not need it to though.
