454491 2006-05-12 22:30:00 Win XP Home SP.2

Am trying to set up an 80gb hdd for dual-booting Win.98se & XP Home. Have used Part'Magic to partition the drive (slaved) and now want to use the format option in XP (not using the cd) to format the partitions as Fat.32. The partitioning is 2X10gb for the OS's with the remaining space as two equal partitions which makes them about 33gb each.

No problems formatting the two 10gb partitions but the only formatting option for the others is NTFS. In the MS KB 313348 (here (support.microsoft.com)) it states that "The FAT file system option is not available if the selected partition is more than 32 gigabytes (GB).". Does this still apply or can partitions larger than 32gb be formatted FAT.32

454492 2006-05-12 23:28:00 You can use the updated Fdisk program to format partitions larger than 32GB in FAT32. Have a look at this post (www.pressf1.co.nz). FoxyMX (5)
454493 2006-05-12 23:37:00 did you say you have PartitionMagic (PM)?
PM should not only be able to create parititions it should also have the ability to format those partitions.

Why not make a third partition and make these three non operating system partitions around 20 gigs or so.

454494 2006-05-13 04:51:00 FoxyMX - Thank you. At my knowledge level I thought Fdisk was only for partitioning not for formatting as well :( I have downloaded the MS update and will try it out from a Win.98 bootdisk as it seems not to apply to Win XP.

bob_doe_nz - Thank you for not RTFM'ing me about Partition Magic  I've now re-done so and used P.M. for formatting as well.
