455465 2006-05-17 07:10:00 Doesn't look like much of an apology to me Overdrive_5000 (4950)

455467 2006-05-17 10:45:00 looked like a DNS issue from where i was sitting.

I could get to sites no problem if i used an IP.

I'm not with xtra, but my Dad is, I went there the night of the outage and figured out it was a DNS issue, I switched him to the Orcon DNS servers and he was away laughing.

doesn't say anything about it in thier "explanation" though.

I don't get it, they have 2 DNS servers for redundancy but they were both down for the count!

455470 2006-05-17 11:04:00 If you are lucky enough to have a wireless router you dont need to bother with all those dns numbers you just set your pc to automatically find them as well as your ip address in the network settings, works very well no probs with it at all. Hitech (9024)

You must be thinking of DHCP, the problem with that is my dads modem keeps doing strange things with DHCP enabled, so once a month I would have to fix it, solution? static IPs, I don't have time for that s***

455472 2006-05-17 21:48:00 Hmmm, what are the chances of Xtra giving a refund to all the affected customers for the inconvenience? It was good enough for Sky TV when they had an outage.

My guess is no chance!! :groan:

You are thinking of DHCP - most routers have that enabled by default.

That wouldn't help in this case because your router gets all the info like DNS servers from the ISP when it connects, so Xtra customers got the dead Xtra dns servers. If you want to use a different DNS server than the one your ISP sends out to your router, you have to set it manually.
