455414 2006-05-16 23:30:00 Hi all - from a British guy in need of your advice!

The last time I built a PC was a good 4 or 5 years ago, I guess. I am looking to rebuild my current PC over the next week or so with a new:

CPU & Fan
Motherboard
RAM
Graphics Card

I have recently purchased a new PSU (Thermaltake PurePower 560W) and the HDD I have is fine (not ‘SATA’, if that makes any difference?!).

I do not use my PC for gaming, so the graphics card doesn’t need to be anything majorly fancy in that respect. I use it mainly for web design, DVD creation, photo manipulation, DVD copying and using MS Office software. Quite often, I will be running several apps at one time. I am not really interested in overclocking, either, mainly because I don’t know why I’d need to do it, and even if I did, wouldn’t know where to start!!!

A major consideration is that I need the PC to be as quiet as possible, since it is used in the bedroom and I like to leave it on overnight to download.

I have a budget of up to around £400 (approx 1,205 NZD), and would like to buy something which is as future-proof as currently possible! I have been looking at both the single and dual core processors from Intel and AMD, but in particular the Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+.

I have no idea what is compatible with what, so am not sure where to start with all this really. I am completely out of touch with all this, so please make your replies newbie-friendly! :)

Your suggestions would be much appreciated!

Many thanks :D

CPU=3800 dual core use the heatsink fan that it comes with first and see if that is not to loud first before buying a after market hsf as it comes free with the cpu.If you want a after martet hsf afterwads, like the original one was to loud then get a Zalman, very good hsf, very quiet.Has a fan control with it to turn the fan down for silent running.

Ram=1gb/2gb ddr 400 get some brand that is not to expensive as you are not overclocking.Helps out for what your doing faster.

Motherboard=A good brand Nforce 4 939,with a heatsink on the northbridge. No little 40mm fan they make noise!!

Graphics Card=6600gt with a heatsink on it,no fan,I think Gigabyte makes one, have a look on their website to check though.Cheap enough and can play some games if you change your mind later on.Which usually happens!!

Case=Antec P180,P150 read reviews on these do a google search they are good quiet cases.

Monitor=lcd takes up way less space, good for the bedroom.Get one with a 8ms response time or less.Prices are good now for these.Make sure it is a popular brand like philips etc.=better quality.

Hope that helps. :)

455416 2006-05-17 01:50:00 Ditto what Memphis says.
Get good brands though. ASUS motherboard. I have recently bought the AMD x2 3800+ and am happy with it.
If you are not changing the case, at lesast chnage the power supply. Enermax is a good brand.

455417 2006-05-17 02:35:00 A major consideration is that I need the PC to be as quiet as possible, since it is used in the bedroom and I like to leave it on overnight to download. If your case has 80mm fans swap them for 120mm ones. Generally the larger the fan, the less speed it needs to run at, therefore quieter. Greg (193)
455418 2006-05-17 03:28:00 Can get a fan controller installed either into the spare floppy bay slot area or into a spare dvd/cd slot bay area.

Your case fans plug into it and the fan controller plugs into a spare power supply molex plug on the power supply and you can then use the fan controller to turn the fans up/down as you please.

Makes your fans quiter,I have one and its great.

Yes 120mm fans are better but if the case does does not have them then, and the case cant take 120mm fans then you can swap your 80mm fans for quiter ones, and the fan controller will make a big difference as well in making the fans quiter.

Powersupply:a good brand with a quite 1 x 120mm fan is good.(oh I see you have a psu allready)

This is also very good.Do a google on it.Or similar kit from others.

Akust NoiseBuster Noise Absorption and Insulation Kit

Hope this helps.

455419 2006-05-19 11:58:00 Ok, after doing my research and following your wonderful advice, I think I've decided on my final spec:

Asus A8N VM CSM Socket 939
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800 512K Retail Socket 939
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO
Corsair Twinx 2x1GB matched XMS3200 3200PT Platinum

Total: £405.85 inc VAT

What do you think? The mobo has onboard graphics capabilities, so that should do me for what I need (for now, anyway!) :)

One question I do have is with regards to the memory. I have a choice of two types of Corsair memory, with about £3 difference between them. They are:

3200PT
3200C2PT

Which one should I get?

And will this system run really quiet for the price?

455420 2006-05-19 12:10:00 get the C2PT, very nice ram (same as mine in fact)

Can't comment on the cooler, you should hear it going before you decide to buy.
