455133 2006-05-15 23:50:00 My dad uses a Dell Latitude C600 for his radio programs (he does two each week). He has about 18GB worth of music (and I suspect at least 3GB of that has gone to him using WAV instead of MP3 but I'll sort that out). He's been using WMP10 on WinXP home for about a year now but he wants to know if there's a better alternative out there.

What he really wants is something that when a song from a playlist finishes playing, instead of starting the next song the program pauses it. I don't think WMP10 does this (but I may be wrong so let me know) so I'm wondering if there's any other programs or possibly even Linux distros which may do the job better.

One thing that's very important is that the program must be able to discover media files in it's storage folder automatically like WMP10 does (eg if I drag a MP3 into the My Music folder it'll eventually be found automatically by the program and added into the library).

All suggestions are welcome.

455134 2006-05-16 02:19:00 Get the preview of WMP11, when its out .

I think u can download it from Thursday this week .

Altho, it looks like some shareware sites are hosting this version already .

It looks pretty good, and seems to work with a few portable mp3 media players . I havent really had a good enough look, to see what it can actually do .

And u can drop and drag to say an ipod to sync whatever to the Ipod .

Altho I dont really use WMP myself . I used to use Jetaudio +, and Winamp .

BUT, now just use Winamp and its plugin, to transfer to and from the Ipod .

Sounds like a few settings are messed up in WMP .

The playing the whole album or whatever is easy to rectify . You can even enter music choices into a playlist that will play from beginning to end, even in random order .

First, if you open an album for example and double click on a particular song (or hit the play button . . same thing), then that's all that will play . But, if you double click on the artist in the tree area, or highlight that name and then click on the play button, then WMP will play the whole album according to the preference set to either randomly play a song, or play in order .

Second, if you just double click in the tree on an artists name, and there is more than one album in that artist's name, then WMP will play all the songs by that artist, again according to the random or not settings in the WMP toolbar PLAY values .

As far as discovery of media in the puter, there is a search option in WMP too . It will find all . . . including videos and . wav and other sound effects and such wherever they may be hiding in the harddrive . Go to TOOLS>>SEARCH FOR MEDIA FILES and let it discover whatever you want in whatever area you want searched according to your preferences .

There are a lot of persons here who do not like WMP . . . I don't know why they feel so . It is very intuitive and will try to play almost anything you throw at it . There are sites to get other codecs to make WMP handle RealPlayer, QuickTime and others too . I don't use anything else but PowerDVD . . . and that's another long story .

I will NOT allow RealPlayer or QuickTime into my system, as they like to "phone home" and report all the time .

I have partially crippled WMP along these lines too, but you will find that the denial of home-base communication can be set to whatever you want . Q-T and R-P apply blanket permissions and will not let you pick and chose what you will allow them to do .

Just my thoughts . . . but they are what I use all the time . . . . and I know they work well .

455136 2006-05-16 04:35:00 Hmm WMP11 sounds good.

Sorry just to clarify, my dad makes playlists beforehand and plays those. However he'd like it if WMP would automatically stop after every song so he manually plays each one. Not a very big thing you see but annoying nonetheless. Anything along these lines?

455137 2006-05-16 16:07:00 Hmmmm . . . he wants it to PAUSE or STOP after every song? Hmm . . . let me think . . . .

He could record a blank MP3 file and insert it between each song; that way he will get his pause .

Just for kicks and giggles, can you tell me why he wants the stops in there?

455138 2006-05-17 01:10:00 Sorry didn't clarify that, he wants it to STOP playing after each song but be ready so that when he clicks Play the next song in the playlist starts.

The stops are required because otherwise the next song will automatically starts playing which is not something he wants to have happening when he is playing the music on his radio programs (basically so he doesn't have to always keep an eye on the laptop to stop it in time).

Would Winamp do this? I personally dislike the program but if it could do all the stuff I stated earlier then it should be a viable option.

455139 2006-05-17 01:19:00 Er, i dont think so... Most play lists are designed to play the next song in the list (whether in order or not).
I'm not sure of any particular program that will allow him to do what he wants, but you could try Media Monkey... I'm not at my computer right now so i can't confirm this, but i believe you can have playlists which you can select individual songs to play. I haven't used Media Monkey much to try this sort of thing.
Good Luck

455140 2006-05-17 02:10:00 Foobar2000 (http://www . foobar2000 . org/) is able to stop playing after the current song .

Foobar2000 was designed as a very "lite" music player so I don't know about it being able to "discover media files in its storage folder automatically" . There are plugin components to extend the program's capabilities, however, so there might be something there that can do that .

If you need assistance you can browse or ask for help at their forum as the program isn't all that intuitive when you go beyond the very basics . Once you get the hang of it it is very good .
