455582 2006-05-19 02:09:00 This sounds like what I want .
Seagate Portable Hard Disk Drive, 40GB, 5400rpm, 2048KB Cache, External, USB 2
That one is more expensive than the WD drive you listed further up the page but that is what you want then go for it .

You are aware that those two drives are smaller physically than normal desktop drives, aren't you? That means that you are paying extra for their compactness and they are also slower than desktop HDDs .

I am looking into this kind of thing for myself but will be buying the enclosure to use with an existing hard drive rather than buying a ready-made unit . If you prefer something ready-made then go for one of the units you referred to above .

Regarding backing up your files I would suggest that you organise your computer's hard drive so that the files to be backed up are all in one "master folder" then create a batch file to copy them all to the external drive when required . All you need do then is double-click the batch file's shortcut and wait for it to do its job . That will make things so much easier .

455583 2006-05-19 02:44:00 OK Jack, if that's big enough for your requirements it will be an excellent drive.
I have a similar drive plus one in an enclosure. If I had to pick just one I'd stick with the enclosure. You get 4 - 5 times the capacity for 1/2 - 2/3 of the price.

Jack said he didn't want to run backups. Otherwise wouldn't it just be easier to buy an external drive WITH backup software like the Maxtor One Touch line (an example only)? Then you get verification of your backup as well and you only touch one button. ;)

Can you refer me to such a batch file? Thanks.

455586 2006-05-19 04:24:00 Hi Scouse, you might want to take a look at this thread ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=68762&highlight=xcopy" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) as Nigel's batch file is very similar to my own .

Not sure whether you know how to create a batch file but just paste Nigel's lines into a new Notepad file, save it as something like [b]backup . bat[/url] remembering to choose Save As > "All files" then amend the directory and file paths to suit your own .

Sing out if you need more help .

I know that Jack doesn't want to "run backups" but he does want to copy his files to another hard drive, an external one . It might not be the correct terminology but as far as I am concerned that is "backing up" his data . All I was suggesting was a way to make it as simple and hassle-free as possible and whilst it might take him a little time organising his data on his hard drive to begin with, once that is done it is no more a hassle than to plug the drive in and double-click an icon .

In theory anyway . We are talking about Jack here, remember? ;) :D

:) Precisely why it might be a good idea to post a link or some code (with instructions) for said batch file. Absolutely agree that the batch file makes the task simpler - but setting up the batch file is a task in itself. No offence to you Jack.

455589 2006-05-19 04:47:00 It should be a piece of cake for Jack though. He was brought up on DOS. ;) :p FoxyMX (5)
