455524 2006-05-18 08:17:00 Don't know what all the argument is about. Everyone knows Auckland is the most miserable , over crowded , untidy city in the world.
Even the residents know this. That's what makes them depressed.

455527 2006-05-18 10:45:00 Oh really? Lived in Auckland? Been there long?
35+ years. I'm surprised you asked.

MOST Aucklanders can barely afford the mortgage payments on one house there.
Speak for yourself. No mortgagee sales round here....where do you get these facts? The word 'most' implies more than half given it can only be compared to those who can't. IF (and that's a big if) your assumption / presumption is correct then I would expect to see mortgagee sales on a significant number of properties. That is not the case. So for any non-Aucklanders reading this, don't take sweeping generalisations like 'most Aucklanders' as fact because it is simply not true.

For instance we sold our West AUckland house and paid back the bank which left us a budget of $100,000. Masses of houses costing that in the rest of the country is there??
So you wish to purchase a house outright with post-mortgage proceeds? It sounds like you are comparing apples and oranges. Take the mortgage you had plus the equity you have and you could afford two or more houses in Invercargill of the same calibre / standard / relative standing - assuming you could afford the mortgage you had. But to compare prices on the basis of not having a mortgage is unrealistic. Yes Aucklanders have mortgages but that doesn't mean the rest of the country is mortgage-free.

I can't believe an ex-Aucklander took my bait...........oh well. I was hoping to catch someone from Wellington or Wanganui or maybe even Rotorua.

If someone were to research the statistics on mental health issues (which was the point of this thread) on a per capita basis, then I would expect the ratios to not be significantly different for Auckland when compared to the rest of the country. Keeping in mind that whilst we have a number of institutions in Auckland, not all inpatients are Auckland residents. In summation, I believe Google have it wrong given our super 14 rugby team is known as the 'Blues' and a number of ISP's terminate in Auckland, as stated by other posters.

Auckland City is a cancerous rat hole inhabited by predators (such as Telecom, Business Round Table{snip}

Furthermore, while we are on the subject of 'facts' the aptly named poster 'braindead' stated that Telecom is an Auckland company. Really? You need to research your facts. 'Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Ltd' is a company registered in Wellington, the address for service is in Wellington, with 4 directors resident in Wellington (including Theresa Gattung), 2 resident in Auckland, 1 in Australia and 1 in the UK. So how can you label Telecom an Auckland company?!?!?!

And as for the business roundtable. Their address?
New Zealand Business Roundtable
Level 12
The Bayleys Building
171-177 Lambton Quay
P O Box 10-147
Wellington 6036
New Zealand (http://www.nzbr.org.nz/)

Statements such as this, plus comments along the lines of 'south of the Bombay Hills' and so forth show the posters for what they are. I'm not interested in regional debates (despite putting out the bait earlier). Each city / town has it benefits and faults. But I'm more than happy to debate points of fact with posters who make sweeping generalisations, or who have clearly not researched their facts.

:
And which suburb?

I never said anything about mortgagee sales, I said BARELY, meaning it takes a huge chunk of their income. Both myself and husband did work at various peoples houses and thus got to see how they lived and a fair idea of what they considered a big bill.
yes there are plenty that have nice big houses and not much problem paying for them but the reverse is equally true.

And seeing as you bought up the subject of mortgagee sales, take a look in the Saturday Real Estate section - they have big lists every week.

After all YOU made sweeping generalisations by saying most aucklanders could buy 2 to 10 properties ANYWHERE else in NZ.
