455562 2006-05-18 05:46:00 It's a lot cheaper than Dick Smith's equivalent, but if you don't need a pocket sized drive and enclosure plus HDD is even cheaper. Vallis (8886)
455563 2006-05-18 05:51:00 Whoops - something I forgot in my first reply.
Ref using CD labels. Don't bother - they can be a risk themselves and cause out of balance problems. I just use a SHARPE marker - various types available at Whitcoulls etc. They are easily cleaned off with meths.
Of course you have to use that strange skill called writing - it's actually quite fun and easy to do - could catch on.

$250.63
incl GST
Wasn't the one at the top of the page 200gb for $200? Then why are you considering this at $250 for 40gb? Or is the 40gb better somehow? (comes with backup software or something?)

Firstly I have no need for 200 gb. 40 will be plenty.

Secondly. How come a disk five times the size cost less?
Gives me nasty thoughts about quality.

455566 2006-05-18 08:22:00 Buy an external USB2 3.5" or 5.25 drive bay, can pick them up for $50-$70. Then buy any drive you like, you should slide in under $200 with a 120+gig drive and bay.The advantage of this is you can use multiple drivers down the track.

Also $250 for a 40 gig solution is a complete rip off, you can do a lot better than that as posted.

455567 2006-05-18 10:23:00 What I was trying to get at, is that the HDD would be independant to the pc's in the network.

For example, atm I have a printer on one pc. That means that whenever that pc is turned off, none of the other pc's can print. So if the HDD was plugged into one pc, which got turned off, none of the other pc's could access the HDD.

Yes you can do that, but it still requires PC functionality. I have a printserver/storage machine on my network that allows saving of files or printing from any computer provided that the server is up.

Edit: On reflection, I wonder if you could do it with a USB Hub and a USB drive, with all computers hooked to the hub?

If all you wanted was printer access, I believe I saw a small printserver advertises some time back that allowed multiple computers to access a printer without going through another box, but I might be wrong. I'm sure some expert here can confirm or shoot down that theory.

Cheers

It's pretty cheap isn't it? As JJJJJ said, could this be because of poor quality?

Anyway, to do use it on a network I guess you would just share it through windows, and keep that pc on for as long as you need it.

455569 2006-05-18 10:41:00 For my backups I use a DLT drive.

It holds all the important stuff I need and the tape is ok size to cart around. Also I can store one off site with no major problems.

They are cheap enough these days and you can get your hands on one easly enough if you suffer a theft.

Also MSBACKUP supports tape drives so you can easly restore your data if needed.

Tape has a few issues and are not perfect, but the tried and true still stands the test of time :)

Go find a new 40 Gig drive anyway. I don't know if they make them anymore.
Once upon a time I thought 10 Megs rather than Gigs was all I would need.

Yes there is a 40 Gig drive available here:-
www.pbtechnz.com

That will cost $88.87

Then you need an enclosure like USB and I can't figure out what that will cost for that drive. So that will cost some more.

In your original post you wanted to Backup by dragging and dropping so no backup software needed I think.

You might think about BACKUP which is very different to a straight copy. Still should be verified. A BACKUP is usually done through the O/S or Nero or Veritas or whatever. Then it requires you to reload the operating system then restore the BACKUP using the application you used to make the BACKUP.

I have no idea why you would buy a 40 Gig drive or do you just have a spare one.

Also think about the fact you will possibly not be able to boot off a USB External drive until your choice of O/s is available.

If you are planning on getting a digital camera and saving stuff the 40 Gig is not worthwhile.

I have one and it works here still. I don't use a network here. On the other hand I use it as storage and not as my main means of storage. Good to pick it up and copy a persons data then transfer to CD or DVD for backup.

Backup is very simple for some but if you talk about a copy of your very important files then a USB drive works. Otherwise you have two hard drives and make an image. Also what happens if your house burns down so you need to think about off site storage.

There is copy to CD or DVD and store those off site. I use most of these ideas as I do not want to lose some data. I would hate to even think about recreating the data I have built up over some years.
