455541 2006-05-17 11:24:00 I've just bought a new 256MB Radeon card - and all is working fine.

I checked the bios, and the "AGP Aperture Size" is set at 128MB.

Is this right? Will changing to 256MB improve performance?

455542 2006-05-17 11:35:00 The short answer is no.

If there is a game that needs more video memory than it has, performance is going to suck no matter how large you set your aperature.

Also, the video card can only use about 25% of the aperature, the rest is used for addressing.

And finally, don't set your aperature too low, anything below 64MB and AGP is basically disabled.

My suggestion is leave it at 128MB

1gb/2gb ddr400.

2gb ddr 400 if you want to play Battlefield 2 without any stuttering or sloww movement. :D

Load times are faster as well with 2gb ddr 400,respawning is faster as well I have noticed. :D

455545 2006-05-18 03:51:00 Aperture size is meant to basically set the size the system can cache textures in video memory rather than pull the texture data from system memory (theory). I had up till a year ago ish never seen it make any real difference on/off or set to 128MB/256Mb etc, Until I hit a problem with Battlefield 2.

Long story short, had reset my bios for a reason before getting Battlefield 2 and didn't think to change aperture size back to 256MB from 128MB for My 6800GT 256MB. Noticed I was getting fairly bad Lag(bad stutter) while spinning in a 360 degree circle in BF2 etc however general frame rate was good (2 gig system ram BTW). I was sure this was video related after tests.

After many other things change Aperture size too 256MB and BF2 was smooth as silk, changed it back to 128MB and was stuttery again. Needless to say I was surprised to see it making a difference.

Posted my findings in a BF2 forum where at least 3 other people posted significant improvements in BF2 (after expressing huge doubts). Never seen a difference in any other game.

455546 2006-05-18 06:54:00 I understood that the AGP aperture was related to what sort of system memory the AGP cirucit uses to supplement your GFX's AGP memory. I was having stutters and figured that I should dedicate more system RAM to the system by reducing the AGP aperture.

I turned mine down to 128 in the BIOS (have a 256 meg AGP card) and BF2, FS2004 and IL2 are now stutter free.

It seems to be one of those things that work differently for different folk.
