455477 2006-05-17 05:00:00 I have Windows XP Professional. A little while ago, I hit something and all my desktop icons reverted to the default icon. Even when I load new programmes, the icon is the Windows defalut icon. All icons are there; but just as the default ones.

Any suggestions as to how I can get back the pretty icons?

Thanks,
David

455478 2006-05-17 05:08:00 Right click on icon you want to change, select properties then select Opens with, click on change button, select program from list, if not in list select browse to find program, then shut window, select apply from next window and close that window.
Don't know whether there is a shorter way to do this or not.

455482 2006-05-18 00:10:00 Thanks, tried the suggestions on the web-site but didn't work. Have established that XP will rebuild the icon cache but icons are still the default ones.
The mystery remains.
Looks like I am back to installing an old Acronis image. Where would we be without Acronis?
