455142 2006-05-16 02:47:00 A friend has a computer and sometimes when he starts it up autoplay starts searching for something and after a short while say 10 seconds it stops and closes and the starts again. Doese it over and over again. If you click cancel to stop it seaching it stops and closes then opens up again and starts searching again. The only way to stop it is to restart the computer.

I tried to disable autoplay but couldn't remember where the setting is to disable it.
I scanned for spyware with spybot-seach and destroy and it was clean.

Anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

455143 2006-05-16 02:55:00 I thought there was a particular variation of spyware that exhibited this behaviour. Might want to make sure spybot is up-to-date.

Anyhow, search for "AutoPlay Repair Tool" here:

455144 2006-05-16 03:36:00 Hi,
I updated spybot before running it.

That link is for a registry tweak. I thought i saw somewhere that there is an option to turn off auto-run/play under properties in My computer or somewhere like that?.

Unfortunately i was just passing through so didn't have time to give it a good going over. I may have to go back down there and have a good look at it for him. He's only young and using programs like limewire etc so i'm fairly certain its a nasty thats doing it.

Thanks.

95 - ME:
Control panel / CD Rom drives (I think) / right click / properties / uncheck "auto insert notification" / Click Ok / reboot.

2000 - XP:
Click Start / Run / gpedit.msc / click enter

Click the + next to "User Configuration" / Administrative Templates / Click on System / Look for an entry called "Turn Off Autoplay" / Right Click / Select "Enable" / reboot. (imagef1.net.nz)
