| 1391347 | 2015-01-02 08:05:00 | The diff is piss is not harmful if not abused, bit like water if you drink too much of it it will kill you. Wow. Who told you that ... the publican? Or is that just what you keep telling yourself? The key words in Prefects statement are Not abused. A while back when having a few problems my Doctor asked how much booze I drank daily, when I told him -- His reply -- moderate drinking like that over a week wont hurt you at all, in fact it can actually be beneficial. As backed up by this report from Harvard: www.hsph.harvard.edu Smoking cant be said the same. |

It was "said the same" for a long time and doctors believed it too, even advised their patients to take it up to ease coughs etc. en.wikipedia.org Alcoholic beverages are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 carcinogen (carcinogenic to humans). IARC classifies alcoholic beverage consumption as a cause of female breast, colorectum, larynx, liver, esophagus, oral cavity, and pharynx cancers; and as a probable cause of pancreatic cancer.[2] |

I've been drinking for over 30 years, only lightly/ moderate, In younger years been more than once gotten totally sh1t faced ( and felt it for few days later- Been a while though) Never smoked, last health check everything was in great working order, Dr had me at the hospital on the gerbil wheel (as I like to call it) when he was checking on something - False positive to use a computer term :) everything working as it should. If Drinking is so bad then why is the health fine ? |

| 1391351 | 2015-01-02 11:19:00 | Plenty of smokers can say exactly the same. Your point is? My point is that drinkers cost us a hell of a lot more, in all sorts of ways, than any other "group", and it's well past due that they bear more of the costs of their behaviour. The alcohol "industry" is acting just like the tobacco industry did some years ago. |

| 1391352 | 2015-01-02 18:46:00 | Just because a few people abuse piss does not mean the majority should have to suffer. They reckon why commie Anderton failed in his run for CHCH mayor was because he wanted a higher tax on fortified wines like Sherry. | prefect (6291) | ||
| 1391353 | 2015-01-02 18:49:00 | Because Study Groups are known to fudge the figures to suit their agendas I tend to ignore them. Michael Mann and his Global Warming (make that cooling) being a classic example. I dont smoke because when I tried it as a kid it made me that damn ill. However, an uncle of mine was rarely seen without a smoke in his mouth. He started when he was 14 and his hands were nearly black with nicotine stains. When he coughed the whole household wound up coughing trying to help. Mornings seen him go to a tree in the backyard where hed hang onto a branch and clear the lungs. What he deposited at the base of that tree defies description. Anyway, he did die of Lung Cancer and you would have thought the Anti-Smoking Lobby, (who were quite new at the time) had had a great victory. In their excitement to record another smoking Lung Cancer victim, they completely overlooked the fact he was 86! Turning to alcohol I know a chap, a very successful orchardist, that drank a bottle of Gin a day, washed down after 5pm with a substantial amount of beer. He would start the day with a gin, (a heart starter he called it) and would work through the day sipping G&T. He is in a rest home now but is well into his 90s. So I guess it gets down to the TAB advertisement. You Know the Odds, now Beat Them. You quite often make your own luck. ;) |

| 1391354 | 2015-01-02 19:17:00 | If Drinking is so bad then why is the health fine ? Because - like smoking - it's a slow progression. It annoys the nurses at my doctors that my BP is always good. One said, just had a smoke have you, then took it. She wasn't happy with the result (a good result). I have no illnesses either. Yet. Drinking will eventually affect your health too - depending how much you do it, and for how long. |

| 1391355 | 2015-01-02 19:36:00 | Effects of alcohol on the liver Alcoholic liver disease includes fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Effects of alcohol on the gastrointestinal tract Alcohol increases the risk of oral cancers. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach and oesophagus is related to alcohol use. Portal hypertension is a complication of cirrhosis and leads to a raised venous pressure in veins in the oesophagus and stomach. These swollen veins are superficial and bleed easily. Bleeding from oesophageal varices is serious and is associated with a high level of morbidity and mortality. Both acute and chronic pancreatitis are associated with excessive alcohol consumption. Pancreatitis can be associated with a number of complications such as shock, sepsis and abscess formation. Long-term complications include diabetes mellitus and weight loss from steatorrhoea. Effects of alcohol on the cardiovascular system Excessive alcohol use is associated with hypertension and subsequent target organ damage such as strokes, myocardial events and renal failure. It is also associated with a dilated cardiomyopathy with heart failure and atrial fibrillation which may revert to sinus rhythm. Effects of alcohol on the nervous system Acute alcohol intoxication can present with blackouts, head injuries and subdural haemorrhages. Alcohol withdrawal is associated with fits which may be unresponsive to anti-epileptics. The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome results from lack of thiamine (commonly seen in alcoholics due to malnutrition). Wernicke's syndrome occurs acutely and patients present with confusion, visual impairment (diplopia) and ataxia. Korsakoff's syndrome occurs more chronically and is characterised by memory deficits and confabulation . I know 2 alcoholics. One is in his late 30's, the other mid 40's. The older one was in hospital recently, he got an abscess and it wouldn't heal, it ended up being a hell of an infection and he had bits cut out.....they told him the lack of healing was due to his drinking. Both now have developed the shakes if they don't drink. The younger one I saw a year ago, he is as thin as now....looked like ****. The older one is still fat. He looks like **** too now. |

| 1391356 | 2015-01-02 21:50:00 | Smoking has one big discusting effect -- when a person smokes everyone in the room gets a shot at it if they want to or not. If someone is having a quiet drink no one else will get any. Thats one GOOD reason for not allowing smoking in many areas these days. Smokers dont give a hoot about anyone else with their habits. Guess smokers have more money to burn. Again As Prefect rightly pointed out, dont abuse alcohol. Funny how all the na's give excessive examples ;) |
