2015-07-02 04:46:00 | Might pay to check the warranty period for individual parts as well as for the machine as a whole, the hdd manufacturer might still cover it. ..not for parts on a HP Branded machine (or any brand name PC) HP would have probably bought in bulk, at a discounted, warranty limited rate. Even then you would need to send it off overseas to the HD manufactures head office, not really worth the effort for cheap HD's. It would be covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. If you bought it from Dick Smith, Noel Lemmings etc , they are more likely to roll over & give you the warranty you're legally entitled to . Go in & claim CGA .

Yep, HP will buy them differently to other suppliers (like shops etc) , they have different warranties supplied by the manufactures, normally only 1 year. Tried that before as well, if you do a warranty check on the likes of Western Digital and the HDD is the original you get a No Limited Warranty Message. 6554 |

2015-07-02 07:06:00 | Hard drive does sound like its dying, best to save what you can off it as the more use it gets, the more the damage spreads and it'll eventually just wont start at all. I wouldnt even worry about OS at this stage, your data thats important has to be saved. Then look at a new hard drive, or CGA, or an OS to install on it or whatever as you'll have time to do it. You can get oem discs for you computer from HP. Cheers, KK

2015-07-02 23:53:00 | Took it to PBtech as I don't have a disc, they called and said the hdd seems ok (they listened to it but it only makes a noise before it dies). Said the operating system might be corrupt (despite me reloading wn8 3x via the recovery option the last 10 days). Said they will do more tests and hopefully let me know today.

2015-07-03 12:26:00 | Got my PC back, PBtech reloaded win8 via a disc, said they believe that the original win8 and the recovery disc were corrupted as they got the blue screen etc when they reinstalled it via that method, stress tested the whole system for 14 hours, a lot of the extra stuff that HP loads on your PC is garbage they reckon, anyway so far everything has been working fine but time will tell, I hope its fixed for good, very happy with their service. It did work fine for 1 year before it started to play up so not sure how it got corrupted. I don't visit dodgy websites or open attachments I don't know or trust. Thank you for everyones input and suggestions, I actually had removed the hdd and was about to head to the store for a new one when I thought bugger it, put it back in and took the whole PC in to get sorted for once and for all. Fingers crossed.

2015-07-03 12:58:00 | If it all looks to be working fine the smart thing to do is create a system image now on an external disk so you can restore it to this state yourself if it happens again in the future. winsupersite.com

2015-07-07 23:18:00 | Thanks, still having random crashes and reboots disc checks so everything is not good yet. That means theres still a problem and not a corrupted OS to start from. Download Crystal Disk info - unzip it, and run it, what is the condition of the drive. If its Yellow / Caution, or red what are the errors its describing. Direct Download --osdn.jp Believe it or not, stress testing doesn't always show a fault. ;)

2015-07-08 00:16:00 | Disk errors can also be caused by faulty memory as every read or write to disk passes through RAM on the way. However the noise you mention would almost have to be either the hard drive or a fan as they are the only moving parts normally (well except optical drives with a disk in them can be very loud at times) so I'd be looking at the drive as well. As well as Wainui's suggestion you could try the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic software if you can figure out the brand of it (the hardware ID in the driver screen can sometimes point you the right way). When my laptop hard drive was playing up the western digital software flagged it as having bad sectors and gave it a fail result on the diagnostic. Probably no better than Crystal Disk, just more manufacturer specific.

2015-07-08 05:44:00 | I recently had HP replace a hard drive in an Envy 23 just out of warranty. They we surprisingly very good to deal with. Did PBTech actually run a proper diagnostic on the RAM and Hard Drive? Pretty sure those HPs have a built in basic diagnostic, which would be worth running. Think it might be F9 on the POST screen?
