Which is why I have a small Shutdown programme that resides on the desktop. A double click is all that is required. Very easy and simple. Let me know if you want a copy.

1391415 2015-01-04 04:30:00 Just saw windows 10 preview for download , will download it later and see how i go with it Just remember, those are PREVIEW builds, so they WILL and do have bugs, they can be unstable, features not working etc. The last "official" build is 9879, which expires 16/4/15

Theres a leaked version of build 9901 doing the rounds a well, there's several changes in that compared to the earlier 9879. One example is Cortana -- its there but doesn't work unless you are in the USA. Some of the changes certain people wont like because by default they currently open in the tiles.

The next "official" build is rumored to be out about the 21st Jan

No program required, ;) you can simply put the shutdown button on the desktop (if you want) Been using some shortcuts I located the other day - Several operations can be done in half the time that W7 does, and "unhides" some functions most people dont even know exist.

Example -- if you click"shut Down", theres a option to actually stop it as well. ( both shutdown and stop shutdown are no more than a shortcut with the right switches to the shutdown exe)

Or better yet, just press the power button on the PC. Has worked since at least Windows 98 :)

1391419 2015-01-04 05:48:00 7 feels so awkward now. Once you actually get over the difference 8.1 is far better. Not just in speed, but lots of other deeper actions as well. Mind you the majority of people only use a fraction of any OS.

Why dont you simply not use it and use 8.1 like W7 then theres no need to use it ?

On ALL the 8.1 PC's here the tiled screen is only assessed when wanted, mine has shortcuts to some programs instead of having a desktop full of shortcuts.
SWMBO is on W8.1, the ONLY time the tiled screen is even accessed is when turning it off OR going to the windows store because its set up to work how she likes it. Guess if someone doesn't have the knowledge to set things up, theres no help then ;)

MANY people WILL STILL have problems with W10 as well -- Why? - simple they wont know how the functions work. Any one can put a few shortcuts on the desktop, but use many of the new features - they will again be lost and complain.

Windows 7 Home is now gone end of life anyway, so what ever stock is in the shops is all there will be, once its sold there is no more.

I never said Win 7 was better, I just prefer it since I use both on an almost daily basis. On a work based desktop the option to turn off that screen would be a boon as it is never going to be used, so its just sitting there using extra resources that could be better used elsewhere since the CAD software I use is CPU and not GPU hungry.

1391422 2015-01-04 07:31:00 so its just sitting there using extra resources that could be better used elsewhere since the CAD software I use is CPU and not GPU hungry. So how much do you think its actually using ? Please provide data as to how much CPU the start screen its actually using.

Just ran a process logger on this, opened the start screen, and nothing is even logged. The only items running that are using any CPU usage are the Browser ( uses the most), netgear genie, WHS monitor and 3-4 system operations ranging from 0 to 0.5% (Total of everything combined varies between 2-3% ) If you are using a program that needs 0.5% less of system processes - may be time for a larger processor, BTW - this is a 1st gen i3 ---- 2.93GHz CPU.

Hate to tell you ( if waiting for W10) :( , but in W10 you have the option to either work from the desktop or the tiled screen, it doesn't "turn it off" - so its still there just different in how you access it.

1391423 2015-01-04 12:10:00 I prefer 8.1 to 7 but not enough that I'd recommend upgrading from one to the other. If you have 7 it's still very good and there's no real need to upgrade. If buying a new PC I'd get 8.1. I use XP at work, 7 on my laptop, and 8.1 on my gaming PC. XP feels ancient by comparison to the other two but both 7 and 8 are fine once you get used to them.

As for shutting down, it was clunky and annoying on the first release of windows 8 but they did fix that. You can either right click the start button and all the shutdown options are available in a drop down menu (only diff from 7 in practice is right click instead of left) or you can open the start screen and click the power button on the top right - 2 left clicks. No big deal either way.

I have bad luck with the power button though, I push it and see that there's a reaction so I leave assuming it's shutting down. Sometimes I return to find out something stopped the shutdown and the PC is still running, it never happens if I shut down one of the other ways.

If you hate the start screen with such a passion just use classic shell or start 8, either one makes 8.1 feel like a slightly improved version on windows 7. I don't use them myself but I've tried classic shell and installed it for friends who don't like the start screen.
