| 456103 | 2006-05-19 10:46:00 | Hello there ^^ Currently I'm helping a friend to build a new system and currently am running into some very annoying problems . The problem that we are having is that no matter how we setup the IDE drives and the jumpers we always get some sort of problem, its either Window Xp cannot install itself or one of the drives cannot be detected . One thing to keep in mind, I have build several systems before so I'm not a completely new to this, though of course I aint not expert just your average semi-immediate system builder ^^ The system is: Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo, P4 3 . 2GHz (641) LGA775, LiteON DVD writer (cant remember the model number), LiteON CD writer and a Segate IDE 80GB HDD . *All Bios settings is default except for onboard raid is disabled . And boot up device is CD ROM* Here are the list of setup we have tried and the outcome of it The motherboard has 3 IDE ports . ==================================== 1) IDE1 Port - HDD (Master) IDE2 Port - DVD writer (master) and CD writer (slave) IDE3 Port - Nothing in POS screen - All drive detected =OC=While WinXP cd boots and loads, just when its about to get into the menu screen where it allows you to select Enter to install or select R to repair, yeah that screen, just when its about to enter that screen, the screen goes blank and displays a BLUE ERROR screen saying that we may have a corrupted HDD or some sort of virus or something, not the exact error, but I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about it . Keep in mind, I have tried inserted the CD in both IDE drives in this setup, plus both drive mode has been set vice-versa . Though outcome is the same . :groan: ==================================== 2) IDE1 Port - HDD (Master) IDE2 Port - DVD writer (cable select) and CD writer (cable select) IDE3 Port - Nothing in POS screen - All drive detected =OC= Same as (1) :groan: ==================================== 3) IDE1 Port - HDD (Master) and DVD writer (slave) IDE2 Port - CD writer (Master) IDE3 Port - Nothing in POS screen - Only HDD and DVD writer detected =OC=Windows installs perfectly, runs perfectly . . . . though it does not detect the CD writer in windows nor in POS :groan: . ==================================== 4) IDE1 Port - HDD (Master) and CD writer (slave) IDE2 Port - DVD writer (Master) IDE3 Port - Nothing in POS screen - Only HDD and CD writer detected =OC=Like (2) except it does not detect the DVD writer now since its on the IDE2 Port :groan: ==================================== 5) All sort of other combinations of jumpers and IDE slots, though its always either it boots but gives that Blue screen though or goes ok, but one of the IDE drive cannot be detected . Plugging things into IDE3 Port always gave the same outcome as if I have plugged into IDE2 Port . ==================================== Other Notes: *Parts are all new except for the DVD writer and CD writer (both have been tested to work 100% on other old systems) *As you guys know in most or all bios, it'll displays how many IDE ports you have regardless of what in it . In this motherboard, during one of the setups, all the IDE ports in the BIOS disappeared expect for IDE Port 1 . This was a real suprise to me, as all of the systems that I've build and fixed, never I have ever seen BIOS functions disappearing due to the setup . After that time, the other IDE port never re-appeared . (btw, brought the parts from QMB) So I took it back to QMB, they resetted the cmos by taking out the battery, and the IDE ports 2 and 3 reappeared, asked they how or why it did that, they said it was due to the jumpers (with not a very confident voice, that gave me doubts) . And we took it back and here I am . What kept me wondering was that setup that caused the IDE to disappeared in the BIOS was a setup that I have done before and had no problems except for the BLUE screen error . * So I guess what I want to ask is, how could I have both optical drives and one HDD installed on this system . I would of thought setup 1,2 or atleast 3 would get the system up and going with no problem . . . what am I doing wrong? My current systems that I have and have been using for some time now is set like option1 except for it have 2 HDD drive in the IDE1 Port . And of course I did the read the manual . . . . and here I am . Any suggestions or more questions are all very welcome . :) Oh btw, just a personal question, is it just me or is QMB service and product quality has been degrading . I mean I've brought things from them for years now, just felt over the past year the new staff there and the quality just aint as good as before . Thanks |

The first config u gave would be better . Primary IDE - hdd Secondary IDE - CD/DVD . Put them on Master / Slave, not cable select . This maybe the reason why they're not being detected (they're jumpered to C/S, not M or S) . I wouldnt bother about installing the cd writer, since the DVD will write to dvd and CD . |

| 456105 | 2006-05-19 21:52:00 | Thanks for the reply, once I get my hand on that system again I'll turn off the bios virus thingy...btw would having the RAID function on cause that blue screen error? Because I know it by default the RAID function is on when the bios resets, and now that I think about it, there were several times where the RAID wasnt turned off, just cant remember with which setup. Though if turning off the bios anti-virus doesnt work, what else could I try? Thanks |

As for QMB degrading, no they've always been useless in that respect . |

If you're installing XP, and it does use RAID, you'll need the drivers from the mobo cd, (you may have to extract them from the cd, so u need a floppy to do this) . Before it'll even install Windows . |

| 456108 | 2006-05-19 22:24:00 | Thanks for the fast replies, nope the system is not in raid, just one hdd, just the bios have the raid function on, by default. Like I said before I've just realised that some of the setup could have had the raid function on >_<...would that of have caused the blue screen error? Though it has been turned off now. Thanks |

| 456109 | 2006-05-19 22:29:00 | Do you know WHAT revision this mobo is?? It looks like there's Revision 1.x, Revision 2.x, and Revision 2.1. In the FAQ on the gigabyte site, it says this My motherboard comes with onboard IDE RAID controller. But my CD/DVD-ROM drives can't be recognized by motherboard BIOS while BIOS POST? Based on the specification of onboard IDE RAID controller, the IDE ports are provided by the controller do not support IDE ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive. Please install your CD/DVD-ROM drive to the IDE port is provided by south bridge chip. The 3 different revisions of your mobo are here (www.gigabyte.com.tw) So, whatever IDE connector u had the cd/dvd on before (and they were detected), it maybe the only ide connection it'll work in. |
