455866 2006-05-18 23:50:00 In the flat I just moved into, we need to put the ADSL modem/router quite far (~10m) from the wall outlet. Will this length of cable affect the ADSL connection? It's just a normal 10m phone cable (straight from filter to modem, no adapters/connections etc) I'm using at the moment.

I'd like to avoid having the router right at the outlet and running 3x10m network cables if I could.

455867 2006-05-19 00:01:00 Check the Line attenuation and niose margin, mine is 26db and 43db

it mainly depends on your area, as long as you can get a reasonable ping, and you can sustain your max speed without drop outs, it should be fine.

455869 2006-05-19 00:39:00 Your network cable is going to transfer data a hell of alot faster than your ADSL....so the length of cable is going to have marginal effect on your internet speed. superuser (7693)
455870 2006-05-19 01:08:00 My office is in a shed down the bottom of the garden. I laid a telephone cable from the ceiling of the house where the phone line enters from the street, down the outside wall of the house, under the deck, across (under) the lawn, and before the shed was gibbed, took the line up the inside of the nearest wall of the shed, across the ceiling, and down the other wall to the new wall outlet.

The length of cable I laid was about 70m, then there is a 3m cable from the wall outlet to the router. All works well.

455871 2006-05-19 05:00:00 I don't think you'll find any problem with a long telephone cord. A long ethernet cable, up to 100 meters, is preferable. kingdragonfly (309)
455872 2006-05-19 05:08:00 You can wire up a single ethernet cable to do both ethernet & phone - could be a good option if you ever decide to put a computer or something next to the phone jack. Greven (91)
455873 2006-05-19 12:56:00 Yes I also thought that using CAT5 cable would be better, but that means either a) using adapters at either end of the line (can you even get RJ45->RJ11 adapters?) or b) wiring up CAT5 cable with RJ11 plugs.

Obviously b) is the ideal option, but I don't have the crimping tools, and don't have a clue where I could get the cable made.

455874 2006-05-19 22:35:00 Crimping tools and cable are available at DSE I believe, or ask around. Some computer tech shops have a roll lying round.

My own setup, the router is on a 10 metre phone extension, no problems whatsoever
