| 455715 | 2006-05-18 11:20:00 | Yello, does anybody have experience at hosting thier own web site & getting a static IP number? Is it possible in NZ? cheers | Whenu (9358) | ||
| 455716 | 2006-05-18 12:06:00 | Possible - yep. Expensive - double yep. It's really not worth it if you expect to get any reasonable amount of traffic. Web hosting on overseas servers is way cheaper. | Greg (193) | ||
| 455717 | 2006-05-18 14:08:00 | You can cheat like I do, orcon offers static IPs for free with any internet connection, I think xtra is doing it now too, but only for the more expensive connections. I have my own webserver, however I only host the index file which has frames, the contents of the frames are loaded from an ISPs server, I'm actually only hosting a 291 Byte file :) I don't get a lot of traffic though, which is how I get away with it. It certainly is not expensive, if you want I could consult with you on ways to get the most out of it. Check your PM for my email address |

Remember that, depending on which Jetstream plan you are on, you will be limited to 128k or 512k upstream, which is very slow if you are getting a decent number of visitors or your site makes use of images or offers file downloads. There is a nice list of hosts here: www.weblist.co.nz | maccrazy (6741)

| 455721 | 2006-05-19 19:37:00 | I'm with Bluehost. Astounding amount of storage (15GB) and bandwidth (400GB/month) for US$6.95/month. Host up to 6 domains. I'd love to support a New Zealand host, but I couldn't afford that level of service and my own server would cost more than that on the power bill! It works out at more than 50 times the service that you'd get from most Kiwi hosts. One free .com domain name. Great service. http://www.bluehost.com/ |

Usually heavy oversellers have slow download speeds or will have CPU restrictions in place so that you can't use more than a small portion of that capacity unless you have the rare sort of site that uses a very small amount of resources per visitor. | maccrazy (6741)
| 455723 | 2006-05-19 22:58:00 | How much of that capacity do you actually use? I only use a fraction of it for 3 domains. No problem, it's there if I need it. If anyone wants to pay local prices go for it (check www.freeparking.biz). No skin off my nose. My traffic is increasing steadily, who knows what I'll need? Anyway, that's not the point, the price is what matters to me. In 6 months I've had no problems at all. If anyone has doubts about Bluehost or any other host check their user forum for gripes. There are other hosts which are no doubt comparable. I'm happy. |

| 455724 | 2006-05-20 00:33:00 | BlueHost have a fairly good "rep"...however generally US based hosts tend to go through big growth fueled by rampant overselling..then service declines as servers and networks become overloaded...then usually the next step is out-of-business or painful restructuring. Freeparking are just one NZ host, a fairly average one at that given they are primarily a domain registrar and owned by ICONZ who appear to have sucessfully ruined webfarm. |
