455962 2006-05-19 11:18:00 I have been an XP user for going on 5 years, and I have 7 years of IT and system building experience.

ok i promise i will be nice ;)

well that post sounds like an infomercial !

every so often we get a post here with some IT pro git who bleats on about how many years he/she has worked in the IT industry and knows all. generally these posters have been full of sh*t when it comes to home pcs. no tradesman worth his salt bleats on about how long they have worked in their field as they know darn well it doesn't mean jack !

i find most such IT pros are the worst people when it comes to home security. blatantly promoting ideas and methods which will let home owners get infected just so they can have a few more pc repairs to do on monday morning. its also something i have found in the field... most of the IT pro's home pc's i have worked on are usually poorly secured and in a few cases infected. i wonder if that trojan read any of that source code he was working on :(

as far as running in user acc and tightening the OS etc, well thats normal for commericall/business but home pc's are basically at the mercy of default windows install. even if you do tighten it up most people turn that off. why? just like MS most people are happy to dumb down security for ease of use. its not until they use an OS that FORCES them to use user accounts etc that they will actually do so. hopefully vista may end MS's typical "features first at all cost" policy.

frankly pc infections are more a people problem than a technical problem. i would guess 90% of infections are self inflicted. perfect example...the "i love you" virus. nothing fancy technically but it said "i love you" on valentines day and everyone went ga-ga and clicked on it.....so it became one of the fastest spreading email viruses in history.

i know plenty of people who have run windows with no patches, no AV, no idea what a firewall is (no external either) and have NEVER had a virus/malware etc (much to my surprise).

it will be interesting to see if your "advice" will do more good than harm.

So the question is, do you all want my advice? and if I give it, will you follow it religously? with a self promoting, grandstanding entrance like that.... not a chance in hell.

455963 2006-05-19 12:20:00 That is something I don't understand at all.

tell someone what quals you have? doesn't mean anything, try to get a job with no quals? no job.

tell people how many years exp you have? doesn't mean anything, try to get a job with no exp? no job.

Give me another 3 weeks and I will have MCSA, but guess what, that doesn't mean anything, oh yeah, apart from the fact that the whole security section is corporate security, and you study it for every exam (I'm up to my third and hardest :waughh: )

that alone shows up what a newbie you are. all the IT pro's that regualr participate in this forum don't grandstand telling everyone what their quals or exp is.....they let there advice and their helpfullness speak for them.

an old saying.......a trademans qualification is the last job he did. (ie let his workmanship speak for itself)

um, nope, at least one person in this forum has claimed 20 years exp.

This forum is noob city, so I guess I am just joining the ranks huh?
