455952 2006-05-19 04:12:00 Actually, it was quite recently. I do not want to say too much here as this is a public forum and others can use the info.

There are always exploits coming out for all OS's. If someone is determined enough, like the exercise I was on, you will get in to the machine.

All I am saying is be vigiliant.

455953 2006-05-19 04:22:00 Your point is moot anyway, a virus scanner and firewall are not going to stop a determined hacker from entering an open port with a known exploit. Deimos (5715)
455954 2006-05-19 04:25:00 There are other protections you can install or use that can protect against all known and unknown exploits. KiwiTT_NZ (233)

umm such as?

You are a security expert, why don't you enlighten us?

455956 2006-05-19 04:29:00 Ahh ! And so are you. Based on your first post. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
455957 2006-05-19 04:33:00 So the question is, do you all want my advice? and if I give it, will you follow it religously?I am interested in hearing about your methods but will reserve judgement on whether I will follow the advice or not . I don't have a problem with viruses, spyware, etc myself but am always willing to extend my knowledge in order to help others .

I didn't follow a hardening guide, and I'm not going to write 100's of pages .

this is pretty much the reason why I don't want to write it, nay sayers who slag it off, then the rest don't bother because of the slagging . If you are sensitive to others being critical of what you write then you had better not post it then because it is virtually almost guaranteed that some of the feedback will be negative and/or critical . You do need a rather tough hide in this place when posting your views sometimes . ;)

No, I never claimed to be, however you do.

Let me tell you why your statements are annoying and non productive:

Lets say that I have a 2003 Server OS running a web server that is also fire walled, but I have port 80 open to the world (because it needs to be to host the website).

Then you tell me "I can hack in to a 2003 server OS with port 80 open with a trojan, you can protect your self by installing some software, but I'm not going to tell you what trojan or what software to install, and i'm not going to tell you how well patched that server is"

I'm offering to HELP people, I'm also trying my hardest not to call you names right now.

455959 2006-05-19 04:43:00 LOL - Name calling. Welcome to the forum. We have all sorts here.

As I said, "Feel free to give advice when people ask for it. We have lot's of people here who can use it.." Some will attack it, some will use it.

As to protection. Do a web search on "Intrusion Detection"

455960 2006-05-19 08:30:00 Come on then. Post it.
I personally have taken some steps too probably a lot like what you are about to tell us.
However you can't be too safe and I still have 2 firewalls (none XP), a resident AV, a number of antispyware progs and RegDefend resident too.

I've never had any problems either except for one rather exciting demonstartion of how well Regdefend works when I ran a .exe that I knew was dodgy.
