456752 2006-05-22 03:33:00 Can you put a Slot A AMD processor into a Slot 1 ABIT AV6 Motherboard without causing alarm and despondency? B.M. (505)
456753 2006-05-22 03:43:00 I think from memory it is Socket A not Slot A. Socket A is incompatible with Slot 1. Slot 1 is an intel design and contained the CPU on a PCB board that "slotted" into a connector on the motherboard. Socket A actually sits in a socket directly on the motherboard.

AMD and Intel designs are not interchangeable.

456754 2006-05-22 04:37:00 there is a slot A. AMD like intel found that they couldn't have L2 cache on die so it was put on the cpu daughter card hence the slot processors.

as allready mentioned you cannot fit an AMD cpu into an intel socket (any ting newer than socket 7of course).

depending on chipset (and bios support) you get as high as 1gig (celeron) or something like a p3 800 would work ok.

456755 2006-05-22 05:50:00 The processor in question is a 750MHz AMD Athlon about year 2000 vintage and is definitely described as a Slot A. (Thunderbird?)

The Motherboard is a Abit VA6 currently running an Intel 600mhz which is described as a Slot 1 processor.

I have my doubts about the interchangeability, which is why I asked.

However, looking at them from the outside they look awfully similar. ;)

456756 2006-05-22 05:59:00 Slot 1 (en.wikipedia.org)

And

Slot A (en.wikipedia.org)

As it says under Slot A:

Slot A is mechanically compatible but electrically incompatible with Intel's Slot 1.
