456705 2006-05-22 00:59:00 don't u think the government should have looked into why international bandwidth is so expensive and why we like australia have these silly data caps? lance4k (4644)
456706 2006-05-22 01:53:00 I assume this is not a serious post?

Has it not sunk in that we are a remote Isand in the Pacific, thousands of miles from the sources of the International data? The cost of installing, maintaining and building reserves for upgrading the cabling needed is expensive.

Its called "user pays".

456707 2006-05-22 02:38:00 but arn't we really behind in technology compared to everywhere else? i heard somehwere that we were the furthest behind out of the first world countries? Jimmy D (2061)
456708 2006-05-22 03:20:00 i heard somehwere that we were the furthest behind out of the first world countries? You're possibly referring to reports from the OECD (http://www.oecd.org/), a useless organisation set up to give out-of-work statisticians something to do. Greg (193)
456709 2006-05-22 04:27:00 Just Google Southern Cross Cable, lots of references, and you will find the cost was around US 1 billion dollars, so it has to be paid for and maintained:

456710 2006-05-22 04:37:00 We may be backward, but a few thousand miles of No 8 fencing wire would cost you quite a lot if you want to install your own cable to Australia. Calculate the losses before you do this. (More volts doesn't make up for losses, you have to inductively load as Kelvin knew, but the other "expert consultant" didn't on the first trans-Atlantic cable.

Even string would be expensive, and you'd have to pay the people stationed every few hundred yards, listening on one tin can and repeating the messages into the other.

Same reason for everything that costs lots. MONOPOLY!

If you have control of something that there is only one of and everyone wants to use it then you can lmot get away with charging what you want.

You could always create a new company and lay your own cable and see what prices you can set but it will take big bucks to start and then the price you set depends on how fast you want to recoup your money.

You can beat those that have the cables now want to get into the positive ASAP.
