456487 2006-05-20 13:34:00 hi team

just got an Ipod and i have the songs arranged in their folders on the PC and i want to have them arranged exactly the same on the Ipod. It instead arranges them into album, artist etc which i dont want as the songs end up getting mixed up. I find it easier to refer to them as per the folders on the PC.

How is this done?

Cheers

456488 2006-05-20 23:04:00 Hi, I don't think this is possible. I am not sure what the structure in which the files are stored on the ipod is, however I suspect it is flat. The groupings for artist, album etc are built using the ID3 tag information inside the mp3 files. I really don't like iTunes, especially the habit it has of putting all the music in one big list, it doesn't scale well when you have 3000 songs or so. You could try a product called Xplay 2, it's money well spent.
As for getting your stuff sorted the way you want there might be a way to do it with playlists or some sort of advanced feature in itunes.. I don't own an ipod so can't say for sure.

cheers

456489 2006-05-20 23:16:00 Hmm I use an Ipod here . BUT haven't really tried to put them in folders .

Before I transfer MP3's to it .

Altho, I dont use Itunes either . I use Winamp and its plugin . . .

Makes transferring to and from the Ipod a lot easier .

And nothing needs to run on startup, like Itunes .

Altho if u want to put them in playlists under each singer, u can with Winamp .

So, when u go to the playlist entry, it'll list the singer/s and their song/s .

456490 2006-05-20 23:20:00 I really don't like iTunes, especially the habit it has of putting all the music in one big list,Click the "Browse" button and iTunes will allow you to view your music by artist, genre, album etc. :) maccrazy (6741)
456491 2006-05-21 05:14:00 Your iPod is probably a newer one than mine which is 4th generation. However you can make up your own playlists on 4th generation which really allows whatever you want. Am sure that your version will allow you to do at least that

Might pay you to tell members what type iPod you have - eg nano ?

456492 2006-05-21 07:35:00 Easiest would be to load the files to the ipod, then just create a playlist if you really want it that way....

You can make a "smart" playlist also, like my smart playlist shows my top 25 played songs off my ipod, which is quite handy.

I have the newest generation, ipod video

456493 2006-05-21 07:40:00 Oops sorry

yeps ive got a 4th gen 40gig Ipod . Was in the process of putting on around 5000ish songs on there . And would prefer them as they are on the pc, if they were all properly tagged then it wouldnt be as much of a problem i suppose . Gonna try the other suggestions by everyone .

Thanks !

As for the playlist thing i was looking at doing that, but that would mean doing a playlist for every folder/album which is a heck of a lot of playlists if you wanna add 5000 songs . Just wanna add them to the Ipod and thats it, did it last night, and holy took a while to add 5000 songs , and when i was browsing the songs on the Ipod, didnt like the way they were arranged . Makes it far easier for me to find a song via the folder name first, which would be the album name from the Ipod's viewpoint, but since a lot of the songs arent correcttly tagged, only say maybe half the songs would be under the "album" group but the rest of the same album might come under the "songs" grouping .

456494 2006-05-21 08:34:00 Don't have an Ipod but I think the article in PCWorld November 2005, page 74 might be what you are looking for. It's entitled YOU CAN USE YOUR IPOD TO MOVE MUSIC.
What do others think?

G/f will probably correct me if I am wrong - but I think it okay to reproduce so long as you credit the source, ie identify that it comes from PC World.

Wow, talk about in a hurry Term_X, you have a whole life in front of you -- I hope !
It has taken me over a year to add somewhere in excess of 1450 songs/tunes and I don't feel that I have done too badly.
