| 456429 | 2006-05-21 07:17:00 | I ran spybot (1 . 4 version) and did what surfer joe said . I had 2762 products immunised and 5 more to do, so I immunised them which it confirmed that 2767 were done ,but when I checked again and it repeated that I only had 2762 and needed to immunise again . . . and so it went on :waughh: Speedy I installed my AVG through the site not a cd . . the freebie AVG that is . I tried to get the 30 trial AVG and although it downloaded the setup was aborted as "some installation files are corrupt please retry' I don't know about you guy's but I'm pretty well fed up with this problem :annoyed: So I reckon it's a good time to . . . . a: throw it out the window b: attack it with an axe c: have a stiff drink e: admit myself to kingseat  f: to take it to my pc dealer Please cast your vote  Thankyou sooooo much for all your input . . but I reckon I'm stuffed don't you? Cheers Wendy Wendy: you are about 9150 or so short on the immunize list . . . this is very bad . . . and I suspect your system may just need a burn down and start from scratch . Did you have any boxes checked in your "Ignore Products" area? It might be a good thing to re-check it again by scrolling thru the list and see . . . just for general practices and info for the future . You are getting a denial of updates from that trojan . . and like I said b4, this is a toughie to remove . It will do everything it can to protect itself . It came in thru Internet Explorer probably on the back of an IM or e-mail from a (?) friend who is also infected . I have heard that this trojan does not to be opened, just getting it in your in-box is enough to initialize it and get it running on the next boot-up . If so, then this is really nasty . As I said, repeating myself here as usual for a really old guy . . . this might need drastic measures like a fdisk and reinstall . Did you always keep your updates and hotfixes (if 98 has any of them any more) current? Not really knowing when you got it, and the futile attempts to get rid of it so far, makes me think it had a payload date that you hit and then all hell broke loose . Hopefully you have a full install disk . . . I think Mr . Bill doesn't even care if you get it online . . . it is so past it's prime that M$ doesn't even care if you get a pirated version . . . not that I am recommending that . . . (depending on your country of origin . . etc) . :xmouth: Actually, my son (M$ tech in the US) is amazed that this trojan is still in the wild . That is why I suspect that you didn't have proper security in the first place . It should have been killed in the beginning, or at least given you a warning and an option on what to do . I hate it when I got a nasty a few years ago: W95 . CIH . damaged . . . . the so-called "Chernobyl" trojan . It had the ability to flash the BIOS and mess with the motherboard; it hid in 1k of the RAM at the time the system was running, and would refresh itself thru a hidden partition on one of my hdds . Very NASTY! We had to reflash the BIOS and trash the hdds to get rid of it . I had Norton's Crappola security at the time (learned to stay away from THAT!), and the warning from them was something like: "We are sorry that you have received a trojan named W95 . CIH . damaged . There's nothing you can do about it . . . now your computer is gonna die! . . . . " or something like that . |

| 456434 | 2006-05-23 06:36:00 | *high five* Although I use Firefox I went into Internet Explorer and downloaded updates from Microsoft site. Then I tried one more time to download AVG and it was successful. I rapt...I was going to put it into the shop this week, but it's such a great feeling to have solved it with all your help. Thank you all so much for persevering with me and not giving up. *opens the bar.. my shout* :) Cheers Wendy |

| 456435 | 2006-05-23 07:57:00 | PREVENT VIRUSES DISABLING YOUR PROTECTION Restore your PC's antivirus defenses and ensure that they aren't blocked again . Q . My PC recently caught a virus that disabled my antivirus software and blocked my access to almost every antivirus Web site . What can I do? A . Some viruses protect themselves by blocking security Web sites, antivirus programs, and other tools that could be used against them, including Windows' System Configuration utility (Msconfig) and Registry Editor (Regedit) . They cleverly block antivirus Web sites by altering your Hosts file - a text file with no extension that individual programs use to assign a specific IP address to a Web page . In Windows XP, this file is in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder; in Windows 2000, it resides in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc; and in Windows 98 and Me, it inhabits C:\Windows . To correct the problem, double-click the Hosts file and choose Notepad or another text editor to open it . Delete any line in the file that refers to an antivirus Web site . Or simply delete the Hosts file; Windows re-creates it automatically with zero entries . Now browse to an online virus scanner to check your hard drive and (we hope) remove the virus . A good one is Panda Software's ActiveScan (e-mail registration required) . It uses an ActiveX control to check your system, so you have to use Internet Explorer . To keep your system's defenses unblocked, change the extension of any utility's executable file from . exe to . com (which, like . exe, is executable) . Thus, for instance, if a virus won't let you edit your Registry, select Start, Run, type command, and press Enter . At the prompt, type ren c:\windows\regedit . exe regedt . com and press Enter . Now the command regedt will launch the Registry Editor . Change the System Configuration utility's executable file from 'msconfig . exe' to msconfig . com . In XP, this file is in the C:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries folder . In Me and 98, it's in C:\windows\system |

| 456438 | 2006-05-23 08:51:00 | SurferJoe I uninstalled Spybot then reinstalled and updated it but I'm still only 2767 covered. Have you got a later program than 1.4? Is yours the freebie? Anyone else only got 2767 products immunised? Wendy |
