456419 2006-05-21 02:28:00 get rid of
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

i would run another AV off CD to make sure your system is virus free.
once that is done uninstall AVG (if possible) then clean up any leftovers, make sure none of it is left as the new install my pick up the old files and cause problems.
then reinstall it useing a copy downloaded by another pc.

also what ver of winzip are you running? sometimes decompressors can cause a few werid problems with some apps.

Hi tweak'e..didn't see your post there before.
I got rid of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE
and the pc did the error thing a few times.. blue screen, black screen then I restarted the pc...so hopefully it'll stay stable.
I'll get another AV off a CD as you've suggested and try that.
Thanx
Wendy

456422 2006-05-21 04:52:00 I'll get another AV off a CD

RUN it off a cd, do not install it. otherwise if you have a virus of some sort it may damage the AV before you can run it.

456423 2006-05-21 05:03:00 Wendy . . . are you runnning the advanced version of Spybot? I KNOW it will clean house on Dropper . . . . . but there are a few things you gotta know first .

1) Get Spybot up and running on the front page,

and then click on MODE,

tick on the Advanced line and . . .

click on through the affirmatives for the next couple of warnings you see .

2) You will now have a lot more control of SpyBot S&D .

3) in the UPDATES area, get the latest and then download them .

(Note, you may have trouble with one or more mirrors for the updates . . . if the load bar does not move for a while, just re-click "Check For Updates" again, let them pop in, and click the down arrow in the "Download Updates" area to get another server . . . sometimes I have to try three to get thru)

4) now click IMMUNIZE .

5) you should have 11917 items in the updated definitions as of May 20th .

6) in the left tree area, click on SETTINGS, then on Ignore Products, and when the data area opens, put your pointer somewhere in the large white area away from any words or letters etc, and right click, and click on DESELECT ALL .

7) Now, scan with SpyBot .

What happens is this: somehow a virus or drive-by trojan gets into the settings of SpyBot, and changes the things that it is allowed to search for and destroy .

If any boxes are click in, then they have had their scan turned off . . that's bad! You need everything that SpyBot finds to be scanned and destroyed if it is bad . . . there should be no exceptions .

By using the "Deselect All" order, you allow Spybot to control the insertion of viruses and trojans that might have turned off SpyBot's setting for that particular baddie .

I still recommend doing all this in Safe Mode . . as it will load only the bare-bones system that is required to make the puter run . . and you will still have access to the internet (I think in 98 anyway), and you can then therefor get the updates and help you need .

Sorry, somewhow I missed that you were running 98 . . . it got past me entirely . . . . of course talking about XP, and I think 2000 too .

TY Sir Speedy for seeing that mistake I made .

456426 2006-05-21 05:57:00 Download AVG if this is what u want from the site.

The version on the cd may also be out of date.

And if u installed AVG from the cd and it didnt install, the first / 2nd time, the cd maybe stuffed.

Why try and install AVG from the cd again.

Wendy
some AV such as nortons can be run from cd. or you can use stand alone tools such as stinger however they only look for a limited number of virus's. otherwise use a boot disk and a dos based AV (eg AVG emergency disk)

i just pull the hardrive out and scan it useing a spare pc but you proberly don't have that optoin.

456428 2006-05-21 07:10:00 Try Stinger:

us.mcafee.com

free and it might run and deal with the problem.
