456367 2006-05-20 04:15:00 Hello

I foolishly installed Fedora 5 on top of WinXP and now its not dual booting. What do I have to do to get it to dual boot?

At Fedora 5 setup, I chose delete all Linux partition and create partition I think. As I did not have any Linux partitions none would been deleted.

Thanks.

456368 2006-05-20 04:32:00 Is it booting to Fedora, or to Window? Are you quite sure you didn't tell it to delete "all partitions"? It would do as it's told.

I'm not sure I'm happy with the "I think" in
... I chose delete all Linux partition and create partition I think.

456369 2006-05-20 04:33:00 Update.

It says press any keys .. I did that and I can choose to boot Fedora or "other".

Is it possible to label "other" with another name like "Windows XP"??

Also is it possible to make my default boot OS as Windows XP?? While it is booting up, I can choose what I want to boot, like if I installed Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Thanks.

456370 2006-05-20 04:40:00 Aha . :D It has just sensibly decided "why would anyone ever want to run Windows?" .

Yes, you can change the name of "other" . Depending on which boot manager is installed, you will change grub . conf or lilo . conf . If it's grub, you don't need to do anything else; with lilo you have to run lilo after making a chnage in the configuration . There will be a line saying "default = 0" (or not . . . "0" is the normal default . . . so just add one . But change the "0" to "1" . )

456371 2006-05-20 06:39:00 So ... you have lost your Windows installation?

If you reinstall Windows, it will overwrite the MBR (Master Boot Record) and the bootloader you currently see will go (along with your access to Fedora ...). The easiest way to install a dual boot system is to install Windows first, and then let Fedora (or whatever) install to the prepared free space and then install the bootloader (GRUB or LILO). The "Other" label can be changed to Windows XP if you like. I even think during installation and the stage involving the bootloader (GRUB in Fedora) it gives you the opportunity to relabel and select which OS should be booted by default.

There are plenty of Fedora Core 5 installation guides available online which takes you through the installation step-by-step if you require this. :)

456372 2006-05-20 07:27:00 Log in as the root user and follow these instructions
~~~~~~~
su -
<put in your password for root>
cd /boot/grub
gedit menu.lst
~~~~~~
Find the line "title other" and change the word "other" to what you want. Save the file and the job is done.

456374 2006-05-20 08:54:00 Thanks for the help guys. I didn't lose my windows. I logged in as root and edited the menu.lst file and now its good! :)

Its not bad but my fav software is not supported which is a shame like ms office, photoshop and the games unless pple can correct me. Not into games as of yet .. but due at a later time.

Now here are some more questions for you linux users. It does not play a DVD movie, what is a good program, what is a good anti virus? Is the firewall that is included with Fedora good enof?

When I try to look at my drives, I can see the A drive, my CDRW drive and my DVDRW drive and the folder of "file system", I cannot see my FAT32 drive at all, is there a way to see it?

Via windows XP I would have a C as NTFS, D as FAT32 and E as RAW this is the linux folder. There is 1 SATA HD, 3 partitions.

Thanks!

Edit, I have found the answes for DVD and NTFS. How can I view FAT32, do I have to mount it or something? I think I can look for the anti virus and firewall myself on the net. Thanks again.

456375 2006-05-20 10:04:00 1. Don't really need an anti-virus. I have been running Linux since 1998 and have never been infected (I have run one once or twice to check).
2. For Photoshop use The GIMP
3. For MS Office use OpenOffice.org (it's better anyway)
4. I would expect that your drive d: is the first drive in an extended partition, so you can mount it as root with a line like this:

mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/fat32

You will need to make a folder called fat32 (or whatever you want to call it) under /mnt first.

If this works then edit your /etc/fstab file to make this permanent every time you boot up.

456376 2006-05-20 10:05:00 The inbuilt firewall is not too bad - if you want a better one try Firestarter. johnd (85)
