| 457284 | 2006-05-24 06:24:00 | An elderly firend of mine bought a PC with XP Pro installed a couple of years ago and Windows update has now detected that it is a pirate version. She's getting a legit XP Home and has asked me to help her install it. I'm in Wellington and she's in Auckland so I'm hoping that ahe can just stick the CD in and upgrade (or downgrade?). If not, she doesn't have the skill to do a file and settings transfer or any thing else complicated, and because she's retired she can't really get a tech in to do this. Any advice? |

| 457286 | 2006-05-24 06:37:00 | I dont believe you can install over the top, certainly wouldnt recommend trying it. I cant think of any way to help than maybe you could find a friendy pc shop where she is and offer to pay. They may let u off for $50 to clean install it.? |

| 457288 | 2006-05-24 07:39:00 | yeah....but there installs and then there is installs. a lot of so called installs are nothing more than shove the cd in and let it run. no drivers, no apps, no patches, no config.......nothing. some techs actually put long hours into an install and if your paying $40-$50 an hour......... |

| 457289 | 2006-05-24 09:31:00 | You can install over top, but it will be messy - you will have the old files (except for the basic windows files) still there, but the applications she had installed previously probably won't work. She won't have the skills to retieve her old program specific data, so she would be better off with a clean install. If she is close to a high school or polytech, get her to call them & see if there is a student that will install windows without charging a fortune. |

Well the techs I talked to in Nelson were charging between $80 and $100 per hour . I agree that trying a local polytech would be a cheap option and with a clean install there is not that much that can really go wrong . The hardest part is often finding and installing drivers . A computer student should handle this easily :badpc: |

If it's a custom built machine OR a PC Company machine, Or even a brand name HP/Compaq, or Packard Bell that has the orgional partition deleted with Pro on it then it's not nessecerly going to be a simple install over the top, often once XP is on you then need to begin the hunt of specific drivers. In saying that though XP may find all the required drivers & be happy :) AFAIA you will have to format the pc 1st & then assumng it is a bootable cd boot off the XP home disk. Im pretty sure running the cd through the existing OS it will see it as a "downgarde" and probably not give any options to do it. I ran into a similar issue only yesterday when I needed to re-install XP Pro into a machine that already had XP Pro (pirated) on it and It wouldn't let me do anything off the cd and that was pro on pro!! I had to use f-disk & format everything 1st etc. initially after the install the only driver it couldn't sort was the floppy disk drive & usb however once SP2 was on it all came right & I didn't have to fluff around looking for & downloading drivers :) Cheers KiwiMR2 |
